Sometimes in kirtan, I share a bit about the spirit of the song, what it's invoking.
It's rare these things get recorded, but last Tuesday these few minutes were.
I had recited the Lalita Sahasranama, and then we'd been singing together for more than 90 minutes.
Songs to Gaṇeśa, to Rāma, Sītā, Hanuman, Lakṣman, to Kṛṣṇa. And then we sang a song to Mother Divine, which I believe is a composition of Sam Garrett: I sing like the birds, I grow like the trees, I choose to live in love, I am joy, I am ease, Oṁ śrī lakṣmī mahādevī namaḥ, we walk softly on the earth in the light of your grace...
And then I was moved to share a few words.
Yoga is about re-membering.
It doesn't ask us to become anything we are not, just to bring ourselves into greater togetherness so we may remember who and what we really are.
It invites us to face the dismemberment and fragmentation we have become attached to, and work with the reality of our human nature to bring forth its fuller, truer expression.
We do have a natural predilection for beauty, for connection, for kindness.
All sorts of dispersing and draining influences conspire to our despair. But they will not prevail.
Life knows how to live, it always finds many ways to do so.
May we remember our capacity to live in beauty and kindness, with compassion and reverence.
