Dry Stone Wall Maze

Dry Stone Wall Maze The Dry Stone Wall Maze is a partnership project between Mark Ellis, who conceived the idea, Friends of Dalby Forest and the Forestry commission.

The Maze sit is at the heart of Dalby Forest (North Yorkshire, UK). Built by Mark Ellis and other local dry stone wallers, the maze will measure 80 x 80 metres, with walls 2m high and 1m wide at the base. The maze has been aligned with the sunrise on the Summer Solstice. Special stone features traditionally found in field and garden walls across the North Yorkshire Moors and Dales will be incorpor

ated within the walls of the maze, to help or hinder the visitor on their journey to the goal. These will include features such as stone step stiles, squeeze stiles, smout holes, kissing gates, phantom gates and moon gates: a showcase of the waller’s craft.

We are open! The first phase, building the centre circles of the maze is now complete and after much help and hard work from The North York Moors National Parks, Forest England and The Friends of Dalby Forest the new paths have been laid and the site made safe and is now open for visitors 7days a week.
You can reach the maze on foot from Dixons Hollow car park, by following the signs for The Dry Stone Wall Maze. The route mostly follows surfaced roads with some tarmac road sections and is 1 mile each way (approximately 20 minutes walk).

If you missed Channel 5 Secret Life of the Forest on Wednesday night and you have some spare time over the weekend you can see it on C5 catch up. Explore Dalby Forest from your arm chair. Watch Beavers with Cath Bashforth, hunt wild flowers with Brian Walker and learn all about Nightjars. There’s some very nice filming of the Maze. Thanks to James Capria and Maks Swiderek for all the early mornings trying to catch the solstice sunrise🌞and all their hours of painstaking work to make a fantastic programme. Well done everyone involved.

Had a wonderful day to day in the sun at the Maze Open Day, meeting up with family, old friends and making some new ones. Thanks to everyone who came along. Sorry I couldn’t get to chat with everyone. If anyone couldn’t find their stone let me know and I’ll see if I can. Thanks to everyone from The Friends of Dalby Forest for helping organise the event and helping out on the day. 🌞

Maze Open Day notice Sunday 2nd October.

Just a note to let all those who are attending the Maze Open Day, (which is now fully booked), that even though the forecast at the moment is for fine weather, the maze site will be really muddy, so we would advise wearing suitable footwear on the day.
Looking forward to seeing everyone. 🌞
