Sunday Carp

It’s your last chance to get in for tomorrow, that if you’ve been waiting to see how it’s fished today !

Well, it’s not been too bad at all. Very fair, very even and very close. In fact nobody has got any idea where the winner will come from. No outrageous weights today, just manageable, good fishing.

A few lost fish today for most, just seems they were not having it quite properly. Angelo reckons he lost 60lb of fish today, so when there is only 3 or 4 fish between the top 5, it just shows how close it actually was.

It doesn’t seem to matter too much what bait you decide upon, they are all working. With the extra few inches of water, the margins should come into their own over the next few matches. The fish are still very hungry !

I wasn’t far wrong when I said a few more fish if yesterday was anything to go by.

Mick was happy with his mixed bag for 22lb 2oz from peg 17, Terry was delighted with his 32lb net of skimmers for the win from peg 20, including the biggest skimmer of the day - 9lb 5oz ! Meat and worm seem to be the go to baits at the minute along with some groundbait and micros. These are big fish and can put away some grub when they arrive.

Both sections were won with double figures so not too bad a day all around.

We watched a massive shoal between pegs 15-17 and if they get their heads down during the 5 hours, the silver record of Dave Armstrong’s 59lb 8oz will be absolutely destroyed.

The fresh water seems to have livened things and is pushing the fish around a bit more. I think we are in line for a bit more wet stuff this week. Cannot wait !

Weekend round up

What a weird weekend !

After the bit of rain and drop in temperatures I really expected records to tumble. But no, as the weekend wore on things got harder. Looking at results across the country it seems that this has been repeated all over.

The cabin lake has produced a few fish. Harley landed one of the best results from the bowl with a total of 8 carp and a tench, topped off with these 2 commons. I certainly recognise the one with the scar !

The silver match had its best turnout of the year. This gave the fish much less space to move away from the anglers and Steve Norris was the man to benefit the most with a wonderful mixed net of bream, tench and skimmers from peg 2 for just over 30lb. Surprisingly there were a few BIG carp lost during the match too.

The carp pool has been fishing incredibly well and another double figure attendance was no massive surprise. What did surprise me was how many people chose to go for a dip to get tackle back during the match !!!

There seems to be a move towards open water swimming across a few fisheries but I hadn’t got any intentions at Lychgate, perhaps I’m missing a trick ?!?

Loads of fish and impossible to catch was the feeling I got from people as they weighed in. Ripping the bottom up but refusing a hookbait. But it was exactly the same for everyone as another close run thing unfolded.

Kev was the only one to break the 100lb with 101lb 6oz, narrowly beating Ricky’s 98lb 6oz. John Latham wanted a stewards enquiry as Kev ended up swimming into his peg to retrieve a top 5. He had caught 88lb 8oz up until then but didn’t have a fish after the swim 😕

A frustrating weekend for a few but it’s fantastic seeing as many people on the bank again. Thank you all for your continued support, it’s massively appreciated.

Matches the same again this week, Wednesday and Sunday carp and silvers on Saturday.

It’s also bank holiday on Monday, would anyone be interested for then ?

Wednesday open

On this day, 15 years ago we had 22 turn up on a Wednesday, and someone commented that didn’t anybody work any more ! 47lb won the match. 8 years ago on this date it was a Sunday and we had 19 people attend to fish in a summer league, Andy Findlay won, with 146lb, narrowly beating Jonny Harvey. Fast forward to today and only 4 people turn up and just look at the results

1st Glyn Davis, peg 1 - 260lb 8oz
2nd Robin Duffy, peg 7 - 223lb
3rd Chris Dyde, peg 3 - 168lb
4th Stuart Gollop, peg 5 - 125lb

Baits from chick peas, meat, corn, pellets, paste and bread. Methods from short pole, to long pole, waggler and the method. Fish from 2lb to 12lb. Yes, I wrote chick pease !

I’m not sure where everyone is going fishing these days or how many have changed hobbies, but there is sure some fantastic and consistent sport going on in Stoke Golding.

We had more turn up on Saturday than we have had all year. A full car park was lovely to see.

Paul Fellows was almost disappointed with peg 11 when he drew it because it had some fluff and scum built up on it - he wasn’t complaining at the end, with his net of skimmers !

Another remarkable frame from Wednesday’s open match. The carp are feeding all over the pool and it doesn’t matter where you draw. When there is nothing to choose between the weights every lost fish can be costly !

The water is low but it’s not causing them any distress, in fact, it’s fishing its head off !

The silver fish matches on Saturdays are becoming slowly busier and closer as each week goes by. Last Saturday, Steve Norris won with 22lb 10oz, narrowly beating Adam Duffy with 21lb 3oz. Mick Harvey and Ian Shirley were not far behind either.

The Wednesday and Sunday matches are throwing up big weights consistently, all over the pool. We had a keep net violation on Sunday and the knock back actually cost the match - Mick Harvey, finally getting rid of the bridesmaid badge ! I’m not going to say who went over as that would not be very fair on Gary and it’s the first net violation for ages. Oops ! Classic schoolboy error.

The carp are ravenous at the minute and winning weights are topping 200lb. Shep, The Mussel Man, has broken his best weight with a 173, and last Wednesday saw a 181, 177 and 154 in the top 3 !

Jon Courtney is running the Sundays and Adam is there again on Saturday and keeping the family tradition going Robin does Wednesdays. It really helps if you book in as it gives these people an idea of numbers.

We definitely need some rain but nobody seems to mind too much while the fishing is as good as it is. Thank you all again for your support, who knows, one day I may return ?!?

Saturday silvers

A bit of a collectors item, this photo. Yes, it is Terry Hill and he hasn’t caught any carp !!!

The water levels are low, making it harder to get bites. Actually, we could do with about 2 foot of rain ! But there are still a few fish that are willing to feed all around the pool.

Still nobody is fishing for bites, preferring to sit it out on bigger baits waiting for the tench and bream. Looking at the days results it would take a very good little fish man to be catching 20lb+

Wednesday carp

I made sure I was there for the weigh in today just to see a carp or 2, it’s been that long ! I’m so pleased I did, too.

Terry Hill’s long run of poor form continues with another win from peg 7 today. With only liners on the bomb, Terry fished the long pole and managed to find a good run of fish that were happy to feed shallow and take slapped pellets. He’d also been feeding his margins and when the long line slowed it was time to come short. It took a while to find out what they wanted but eventually he worked out that if he avoided putting micros and maggots in, and only feeding corn with chopped worm the carp were lining up.

Glyn has caught well on the waggler with banded pellet and Robin has caught on the meat long and bread short in the margins.

Nobody caught anything in the last 30 minutes and Terry took 90 minutes to sort out how and what to feed along his right margin. Imagine what might be possible if they fed from the start - ridiculous!

Robins top 2 exploded when one of his fish decided it wasn’t ready to be landed. He plans to telescope and tape it tonight- good luck with that !!!
