Wrapped up another introduction to sea kayaking at everyone’s favourite spot today! Couldn’t have found better conditions to test out a range of skills forged on the loch and shown in all their glory today in the sea caves and arches around Portknockie. It wasn’t all as flat looking as in these pictures and the team took in plenty of choppy waters amongst the rocks. A proper paddle for this group of new paddlers. Well done!

You are never to old to play ‘follow the leader’.

Day one of the introduction to sea kayaking course at Loch Achilty saw us progress through a wide range of skills for forward paddling. Another fantastic and enthusiastic group of paddlers making me look (and feel) good!

We are heading to sea tomorrow for sure!

Thanks Graham Boyle for assisting today.

Continuing my Station to Station Exped Series, Martin and I made the journey from Nigg to Dornoch.

It started with dreamy sea state round the North Sutor of Cromarty and we took in Kings Cave, a fine coffee at Balintore Spar, the Mermaid of the North and a dreadful scramble over rocks to our campsite at Rockfield. Worth it for a cheeky evening meal at The Castle Hotel, Portmahomack before a very rainy night.

Woken by a flock of sheep telling us to baa-ger off before 5 am, we were able to get round Tarbat Ness and start the 13km crossing to Dornoch by nine. Into Dornoch by lunch-time. A wee bit of navigation needed with the changeable weather over the weekend.

Great trip - not doing that crossing again though!

On day two of this Inverness Canoe Club introduction to sea kayaking course we found some amazing variety at Cromarty. Extra challenges were eaten up by this brilliant group including some of the wet stuff!
Confident these paddlers will be an asset to the club as they begin their paddling journeys.
Great lunchtime views too!

A cracking day today at Findhorn for a special introduction to sea kayaking course on behalf of Inverness Canoe Club. Another brilliant group of paddlers developing skills for efficient forward paddling and dealing with wind and tide. More tomorrow!

Season 2026 is now available for various bookings. Just in time for Christmas!

There are three weekends next year for the popular Introduction to Sea Kayaking in April, May and June. I do not plan any other courses in 2026 so please get in early to avoid disappointment.

Also Doug Cooper is back for two weekends of Progressive Sea Kayaking in June and September - get in quick. He's a genius!

I will be doing an Improver Course in May based around the Sea Kayak Award - dates for that here too.

I am not advertising specific guided trips for next year but will be looking at dates for anyone interested.

More updates will follow for exploring further afield and multi-day trips in some new locations. Get in touch if something particular interests you.
