Northumberland Coast Path

Northumberland Coast Path The Northumberland Coast Path is a 102km walking trail along the beautiful Northumberland coast from Cresswell to Berwick-upon-Tweed

The Northumberland Coast path is 103km or 64 miles in length, if you choose to walk north,, it starts in Cresswell at the Southern end of Druridge Bay and ends in Berwick-upon-Tweed bear the Scottish Border. The route mainly follows rights of way (footpaths and bridleways) but in some places follows beaches, minor roads, tracks and permissive paths. The route is fairly level with very few steep cl

imbs and the surface is generally firm although some sections can become muddy in winter or after heavy rain. Most of the step over stiles along the route have now been replaced with gates to improve accessibility. A guidebook has been produced by the AONB partnership to accompany your walk, it costs only Β£4 and can be ordered here.

What a wonderful letter to receive in the post this week!

Creating the Northumberland Coast Path all those years ago was no mean feat, but feedback like this makes it all worth it.

We're over the moon to hear that our official guidebook came in handy every step of the way, too. Look out for more news on that front very, very soon!

We'd also like to thank our Coast Care Northumberland volunteer wardens for doing a brilliant job of keeping an eye on the Path!

IMPORTANT UPDATE ❗ There will be a temporary diversion on the path between September 11-15th. The section next to Foxton golf course will be diverted to allow for resurfacing works to take place. Here's an update from the Environment and Transport Dept.:

The alternative route is along the beach unless the tide is very high and covering the sand, in which case we are recommending the original inland diversion along the road.

Hopefully, this doesn't cause inconvenience to walkers on the path. The resurfacing works taking place a rather essential as the section being address becomes incredibly muddy in wet weather.

The Northumberland Coast Path and King Charles III England Coast Path follow largely the same route BUT there are one or two deviations, so watch out! πŸ‘€

Following walker feedback, we thought we'd give you some clarity on the main point at which the routes split at Waren Mill:

πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈ The KCIIIECP heads north along a road (with no verge) via Elwick. In June and July there's an alternative route around Ross - beware, this involves sand and intertidal mud walking, which isn't for everyone
πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ The NCP heads inland to the village of Belford. The village has a wide range of amenities, including accommodation. The route gains height to give views of the Cheviots Hills and takes in St Cuthbert's Cave before heading down through woodland at Fenwick and rejoining the KCIIIECP near the Holy Island Causeway

Remember, if you're walking the King Charles III England Coast Path across to Holy Island this weekend, that the published safe crossing times are for motorists, not walkers.

We have some excellent guidance about how to safely walk on the Pilgrim's Way to Holy Island on our main website -

We're delighted to see the newest stretch of the King Charles III England Coast Path officially open today. The KCIIIECP follows largely the same route as the Northumberland Coast Path (slight deviation at Belford, message us for more info if you need it!) but will provide a boost to local infrastructure and economy that we're very pleased to welcome.

And it's time for the final stretch! Stage 6 of the Northumberland Coast Path will see you walking from Fenwick to Berwick at Scotland's border. You'll start near the historic Holy Island causeway, and wind your way through some of Northumberland's most remote coast areas. As always, David Steele and walks and talks you through this section wonderfully on his channel Plan, Watch, Walk.
Time to start planning your trip to the Path this summer...!
