A little bit of a rant .... PLEASE if you are going to ride and lead horses on the road, have the horse that you are leading on the inside AWAY from the traffic. There seems to be a growing trend of riders leading a horse on the off side. The whole idea of leading on the nearside is that the led horse doesnt kick out, or swing its quarters out etc at passing traffic.

With a lot of bridle work coming from abroad, corners are sometimes cut by using cheaper fittings.
Cheek Pieces a few years ago were readily available in 3/4" for Full Siize, 5/8" for Cob and 1/2" for Ponies. Nowdays 1/2" is the norm for Full size bridles.
Corners are cut by using cheaper fittings such as the Stud Hook that used on cheek pieces and reins. As you can see they are available with either a wide base or a very thin base. The former will lie still and not move where as the latter with no base purchase will soon start to move and breakages can happen.
Next time you clean you tack check your cheek piece and rein hook studs for movement. They can always be replaced with better quality fittings.

With a lot of bridle work coming from abroad, corners are sometimes cut by using cheaper fittings.
Take for instance the hook stud which are used on many cheek pieces and reins. These can come in different sizes and quality.
Pictured is a large Hook Stud against a small Hook Stud.. The former has a wide base and will not move whereas the small hook stud will move about.

We have a few custom made copper roller bits here made by the English supplier Abbey England Ltd.
This mouthpiece is ideal if a horse leans on the bit, and does not like the more baulky Waterford style. They can be made with either a lozenge or french link centre and in many cheeks styles.
