GLP-1 medications are changing the conversation around weight loss, but one of the biggest shifts we’re seeing is that more people are now prioritising strength training alongside them. And that’s a very good thing.
While GLP-1 medications can be highly effective for reducing body weight and improving metabolic health, rapid weight loss can also come with a reduction in lean muscle mass and potentially impact bone density if training and nutrition aren’t addressed properly.
Muscle is incredibly important for long-term health. It supports metabolism, improves insulin sensitivity, protects joints, enhances mobility and helps maintain strength as we age.
Bone health matters too. Resistance training places healthy stress on bones, helping improving bone density, something especially important during periods of significant weight loss.
This is why strength training should be a key part of any GLP-1 journey, not just cardio or eating less. The goal shouldn’t simply be losing weight, it should be improving body composition, maintaining strength, and supporting long-term health.
At the same time, recovery, protein intake, energy levels, and training volume often need adjusting when taking GLP-1 medications. We work alongside clients to build realistic training, nutrition, and lifestyle plans around GLP-1 use whether that’s fat loss, improving strength, maintaining muscle, or simply feeling healthier and more confident.
