My name is Barbara Thompson and after falling off my horse and breaking my collarbone I established a small manufacturing base in Lincolnshire back in 2009 and registered Angel Med Ltd. An odd thing to do you might think, but I couldn't believe how painful it was and how little there was to support my shoulder. So I set about wrapping myself up in horse bandages and stuffing sponges in at my shoul

ders to make myself comfortable. It's a long story, but suffice it to say, my crude efforts stopped the excruciating pain and my consultant was really pleased with my outcome. Little did I know then but I had done something different, and after further tinkering with the help of my consultant, Professor Angus Wallace, hey presto, in 2010 we won a Da Vinci award for, yes you've guessed it, a 'Medical Breakthrough'. About the same time I embarked on looking for breathable fabrics. There wasn't much to choose from back then and again I naively thought it would be easy to develop a new fabric to fit the bill. Nothing is ever that easy and three years later, after many failures and much testing, our wonderful new 4Dflex fabric emerged. Thirteen years on and the AngelMed Clavicular Gilet is available through Circle Health Group, the largest private hospital group in the UK, as part of a new dedicated clavicle fracture pathway. By supporting the shoulders in good alignment the incidence of rotation at the fracture site is significantly reduced and with bone length maintained surgery can be avoided. I'm proud to say that it now represents a step change in the way a broken collarbone is supported, and mercifully puts an end to suffering the enduring pain of it. It wasn't long before a rider who'd worn the gilet for a broken collarbone realised that her posture had improved whilst wearing it. That person was event rider, Tina Canton. Not only had she defied the odds by competing in the gilet at a record four weeks post-fracture, but she also found that her posture and riding had improved. And so the Rider Gilet was born along with the brand name 4DflexiSPORT. The fabric was so revolutionary I couldn't wait to get it out there, and that's exactly what happened. The 4DflexiSPORT brand now represents a range of performance sports products all made with that wonderfully breathable airflow fabric including, the Rider EquiBelt. And remarkably, even when tightened for support, it doesn't interrupt the nerve flow on the surface of the skin, something I was concerned about when experimenting with rubberized Neoprene fabrics. After testing on many dozens of people, some prone to eczema we found that nobody has a reaction. Pleasing indeed to discover it offered a skin-friendly advantage. The rest is history, as they say, and I have been privileged to work with the very best in the medical and sports field and owe huge thanks in particular, to esteemed shoulder consultant Mr. Mr B has helped fine-tune and hone the Gilet family, which consists, The AngelMed Clavicular Gilet Vest, The AngelMed Scapular Control Gilet, and the Rider Gilet by 4DflexiSPORT.
