This man is one of a few men that our junior contingent wont know but without Tony, we wouldn't be where we are today!
He is still at the heart and soul of our club, through the ones that still hold him in their thoughts, the ones that drive the club forward now, trying to always think... what would Tony say, what would Tony do. True legend! 🖤💛
🖤💛Respecting Our Roots💛🖤
Some people play for a club.
Some people support a club.
And then there are the rare few who become part of its very fabric.
This plaque was created for our Past Players Lunch so that those no longer with us could still be present in spirit — honoured, remembered, and seated at the heart of the club they helped build. This one belongs to Tony Rodgers.
Tony wasn’t just a player. He wasn’t just a captain, a president, or a supporter. Tony was one of the true pioneers of Gainsborough Rugby. Without him, the reformation of the club in 1974 simply wouldn’t have happened. Rugby in Gainsborough exists today because of people like Tony — people who believed in the game, believed in the town, and believed in the value of bringing people together.
He was respected by everyone who knew him. Not because of titles or achievements — though there were plenty — but because of the man he was. Even in his later years, Tony was always there. Always supporting. Always staying for a beer and a chat. Always making time for anyone wearing the badge. That’s the kind of respect that we try to teach in rugby, and Tony lived it every single day.
We could write for days about what Tony achieved for this club. His impact is impossible to measure and even harder to put into words. What matters most is that we remember him — properly, proudly, and often. Because men like Tony don’t just pass through a club. They shape it. They leave a legacy that lasts far beyond their playing days.
It’s important to remember the likes of Tony.
And impossible to ever forget them.
