The government announced a plan for over £4.5 billion of investment in walking and cycling back in June, with dates attached 📋

The headline numbers are 5,000 new routes and 10,000 safer crossings across England by 2030. The strategy period runs 2025 to 2030, and £1.1 billion of the projected investment is for Active Travel England.

📅 Both percentage targets are 2035, not 2030. That's 55% of short journeys in towns and cities walked or cycled, and 60% of children aged 5–16 walking or cycling to school.

🚂 The line worth having if you ride a folder is the one about transport hubs. The strategy names train stations as places routes should connect to. That's the exact gap that makes a two-mile ride to the platform feel worse than it is.

A blackboard menu, a gravel track, and somewhere to put the bikes that isn't a railing 👀

🌞 Late August is still holding out here, so these two went out for the afternoon rather than sitting in the shop.

🚲 Both of them tri-fold. Three moves and they're down to something that stands next to your chair, which is most of the reason anyone ends up on a folder in the first place.

☕ The bit that doesn't photograph well is the arriving. No hunting for a rack, no chaining anything to a fence and then sitting where you can keep an eye on it.

🛞 Full hydraulic disc across our range too, which matters more on a loose gravel surface than it does anywhere flat and dry.

If you've never ridden any real distance, this is the one to start on 👀

🛤️ Fifteen miles of old railway line between Bristol and Bath, tarmac the whole way, and not a single car on any of it. The branch line shut in the 1960s and Sustrans started turning it into a path in 1979. It was the first one they ever built.

⛰️ Railways don't do steep. Nothing on it will make you get off and push, and it's three metres wide, so nobody's squeezing past anybody.

🚉 Both ends sit by a station, which is the bit that makes it beginner-proof. Ride it one way, see how the legs are, and get the train back in about a quarter of an hour. No commitment to doubling the distance before you know how you feel.

🚂 Between Avon Riverside and Oldland Common you spend two miles running alongside a heritage railway, so there's a fair chance of a steam engine going past. Staple Hill has a lit tunnel about a third of a mile long where the roof drips even when it's dry outside, which catches everyone out once.

🎫 One thing about the train back. A full-size bike needs a reservation on that line at busy times and the spaces are limited, while a folded bike counts as luggage and just comes on with you.

📅 Weekends near either city fill up with walkers and runners. Go early and it's a different path.

£599 gets you a folding bike on full hydraulic disc brakes. That pairing is rarer down here than it sounds 👀

It's likely the lightest 20-inch bike you've seen.👀

🪶 Full carbon frame and fork on the NEO 406CB, 9kg on the scales. You will notice that on the third flight of stairs.

💎 Carbon is doing two jobs here, not one. It takes weight out, and it takes the buzz out of a rough road surface before it reaches your hands, which is people may not notice when they talk about carbon frames.

⚡ Gears are wireless. The WheelTop system shifts off a button with no cable to stretch or pick up grime, so the shift you set today is the shift you get in six months.

🛑 Brakes are hydraulic disc, same as everything else we stock, right down to the entry-level ECO-7S. Light doesn't mean giving something up at the lever.

📦 And it still tri-folds like the rest of the range. Three moves, down to 73 x 32 x 64cm, which is train luggage rack territory.

Two lights and you're legal? Not quite 👀

⏰ Lighting-up time runs from sunset to sunrise, and for bikes it's the sun that counts, not how dark it actually looks. Sun's down, lights on.

🚲 The slides go through the six things the regulations ask for. Two of them are easy to miss because they aren't lights at all.

📕 All six come from the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 and rule 60 of the Highway Code.

🌫️ Here's the odd one that didn't fit on a slide. Cyclists aren't legally required to light up in seriously reduced daytime visibility, so riding through thick fog at noon with nothing on is, technically, fine. Sensible? No. Legal? Yes.

🅿️ You also don't need lights while the bike is stationary or being pushed along, which is handy if you fold and walk the last stretch.

⚠️ And Northern Ireland runs under its own set of regulations rather than the 1989 ones, so check locally if you ride there.

The duty on your next bike was decided before most people were paying attention 👀

📅 On 24 July the Trade Remedies Authority wrapped up a review that had been running since August 2024, and kept the UK's anti-dumping measure on bicycles and bicycle parts from China. It now runs to 30 August 2029.

📊 Rates sit anywhere between 19.2% and 48.5% depending on the exporter, and not one of them moved. The slides go through what the measure actually reaches, which is a fair bit more than whole bikes.

🇪🇺 Here's the bit that got no coverage at all. This was the last measure the UK inherited from the EU still waiting to be looked at, so every trade remedy we carried over on leaving has now been through a UK review. Quiet ending to a five-year piece of admin.

🧾 Worth knowing as a buyer, because duty charged at the border is already sitting inside the ticket price. It isn't something that happens to a bike later on.

What can I get with only £699? (spend even less with our code) 👀

⚖️ The pattern is easy to spot once you start looking. Light ones stop on rim brakes. Disc-braked ones tend to start around 12.5kg.

💧 Hydraulic brakes on anything genuinely light normally mean a four-figure bike, which is why the combination stays rare this far down the range.

🚲 The ECO-7S weighs 11.5kg and runs full hydraulic disc as standard. Aluminium frame and fork, Shimano 7-speed on a twist shifter, nothing clever going on anywhere else.

Your tyres are probably at the wrong pressure right now 👀

The bit almost nobody does is actually check. We top them up when they look flat and forget about it for months, yet it’s the biggest free difference you can make to a ride.

🎯 There‘s no one magic number. It swings with your bike (a road bike wants far more air than a mountain bike) and with your weight. Your sidewall gives the min–max, and you fine-tune from there.

😮‍💨 Too soft invites a pinch flat. Hit a pothole and the tube gets nipped against the rim, two holes at once.

🪨 Too hard and grip actually drops, because the tyre skips over the road instead of settling into it.

The NEO range is JAVA‘s main line, and the names look like a registration plate until someone explains them. Here’s the whole code:

🛞 349 = 16-inch wheels
🛞 406 = 20-inch wheels
🔩 ALF = aluminium frame, carbon fork
🖤 CB = full carbon, front to back
⚡ ES = wireless electronic shifting, no cable

So a NEO-406ALF reads as 20-inch wheels, aluminium frame, carbon fork. Once it clicks you can work out any model in the range at a glance.

What doesn‘t change across the range is the folding and the braking. These are proper tri-folds, so the bike comes down in three stages rather than just hinging in half, and nearly all the NEO models run full hydraulic disc brakes as standard rather than as something you pay extra for.

If the NEO is more bike than you were after, the ECO sits below it and still gets the same full hydraulic discs. Different budget, same brakes.
