Mistakes and disappointment are part of football. They’re also a huge part of learning.

In our practices, we want the kids to become comfortable with things not always going their way.

Rather than immediately giving them the answer or stopping the practice, sometimes the best thing we can do as coaches is stay quiet and allow them to work through it.

What happened? What did you see? What could you change next time?

Then we go again.

We want our practices to give players the freedom to make mistakes, find solutions and become better prepared for the next moment.

The mistake itself isn’t always the important bit. It’s what you do next and how you react.

Well done to the 3 boys coming in and choosing to develop under the guidance of Liam yesterday. 👏🏼⬆️⚽️

September is here, and with it comes another month of opportunities to learn, develop and keep moving forward.

Every child comes to us at a different stage, with different strengths, challenges and goals. That’s why our Grow 121s are built around the individual.

Whether it’s building confidence, developing technique, working on specific areas of their game or simply helping kids enjoy football more, each session is shaped around the person in front of us, creating an environment where they can be challenged, supported and encouraged to grow.

Niamh, Liam and Grant now have September Grow 121 availability on the Class for Kids page .

To book a session or find out more, send us a message or visit our Class For Kids booking page through the link in our bio or story. ⬆️⚽️

Every new child who walks into a Grow Football session brings something different.

Different experiences. Different ideas. Different ways of seeing the game.

Our job isn’t simply to guide. It’s to listen, observe, ask questions and stay open to what every child can bring to the environment. Some of the best learning in our sessions goes both ways.

That’s why we love welcoming new children into Grow Football. Every new connection gives us another opportunity to learn, adapt and grow together.

A special thank you to Oliver (Currie Star 2015s) for joining us for his very first Grow 121 yesterday with Liam. It was brilliant to have you with us and hopefully the first of many. Thank you to everyone who joined Liam and myself over the weekend. 🙌🏼

September dates for all coaches will be live throughout the week. Stay informed on our Grow Football WhatsApp Channel. Link in the bio. ⬆️⚽️

A first session isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about being open to learning.

This week, Logan (Dalkeith Miners 2020s) joined Grant for his first ever Grow 121.

A great opportunity for them to start building a connection, exploring the game together and creating an environment where Logan can ask questions, make mistakes and discover solutions.

That’s a huge part of what development means to us.

We want children to become curious about their game. To understand the why, not just the what. To enjoy learning, experimenting and finding new ways to improve.

Great to have you with us, Logan. Well done pal. 👏🏼⬆️⚽️

Sometimes the biggest challenge is the voice inside your own head.

The one that tells you not to take the risk. Not to demand the ball. That you’re not good enough. That one mistake means you should play safe the next time.

Learning to deal with that voice is a huge part of development.

Confidence doesn’t mean never having doubts. It’s having the courage to keep going despite them. To make mistakes, learn from them and be brave enough to try again.

For us, developing the person behind the player will always matter just as much as developing what they can do with a football.

Well done to everyone who’s joined us the last couple of days. Some amazing examples of the kids overcoming setbacks, recognition of errors and ultimately fixing them. What a team. 🔥⬆️⚽️

“𝘿𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙨. 𝘿𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙜𝙤𝙖𝙡𝙨. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙖𝙢𝙚 𝙟𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙩𝙝.”

Today was a brilliant reminder of what Grow Football is all about, with Reid, Miller (Bonnyrigg Rose 2018s) and Charlie (Dundee United U16s) all getting their first taste of our Grow 121 programme.

Reid.Right at the beginning of his football journey. Miller. A little further along, learning, developing and building his love for the game and Charlie, playing academy football and continuing to work towards the next stage of his journey.

Three children. Three completely different stages. Three different sets of goals. But the process remains the same.

Learn. Be challenged. Enjoy it. Keep growing.

There’s something really special about being able to work with a 5 year old taking some of his earliest steps in football and, on the same day, a 15 year old academy player continuing to push his development.

Neither journey is more important than the other.

And a big welcome back to Kian (Musselburgh Windsor U20s), who returned to Grow Football today after a long time away. Brilliant to have you back with us pal. 👊🏼

Brilliant weekend of sessions. Looking forward to next weekend already. 🔥⬆️⚽️

Talent will always play a part in football and in life, but it’s what you choose to do with it that really matters.

The little things, repeated every day. Turning up with the right attitude. Being willing to listen and learn. Working hard. Responding well when things don’t go your way. Making good choices, then making them again tomorrow.

Those habits might not feel significant in the moment, but over time they add up.

Yesterday was also a good day personally. My first full day of sessions in over 8 weeks. It was brilliant to be back doing what I love, working with the kids and spending a full day out on the pitch again alongside Liam.

We also welcomed Regan (Leith Athletic 2011s) for his first ever Grow 121. Regan has been along to our Grow Group sessions before, but yesterday was his first experience working with us individually.

Brilliant to have him back with us and another opportunity to keep developing. 🙌🏼⬆️⚽️

“𝙉𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙛𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙖 𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙚 𝙙𝙚𝙛𝙚𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙖 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡
𝙙𝙚𝙛𝙚𝙖𝙩.”

Football, like life, is a long game.

There will be setbacks. Bad performances. Disappointments. Rejections. Things going against you. Moments where you question is it all worth it and moments where other people’s opinions can make you question where you’re going.

The important thing is learning to block out the noise and keep moving forward.

One bad game doesn’t define you. One mistake doesn’t define you. One setback doesn’t mean the dream has disappeared.

Sometimes the biggest part of development is having the patience and resilience to stay on your path when the immediate results aren’t there.

Learn from it. Take what you need from it. Then keep going.

Because the goal isn’t to never lose. It’s to make sure every experience helps you grow.

Well done to the guys in over the last couple of days. 💪🏼⬆️⚽️

“𝙄𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙜𝙚𝙩, 𝙜𝙞𝙫𝙚. 𝙄𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣, 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝.”

We strongly believe the greatest impact we can have isn’t just helping children become better footballers, it’s helping them become people who lift others.

That’s why we’re obsessed with building deep, meaningful connections with every child who walks onto the pitch. Before confidence grows, trust has to grow. Before learning happens, children need to feel valued, understood and supported.

The best coaching isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about creating an environment where children feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes, encourage their teammates and eventually pass on what they’ve learned to someone else.

If a child leaves our sessions with more confidence, more kindness and a willingness to help others, we’ve achieved something far bigger than football. It’s the most rewarding feeling in the world.
