Remember when was a thing?
Today marks 14 years since I attended my first session with Ana Forrest, 12 years since certification with Forrest Yoga (I was already teaching Ashtanga and Hatha classes for a good few years at this point).
I was familiar in my own practice with the rigours of a set sequence and had begun dabbling in variations as my community grew. But, the needs of my body were changing, I was in a dark place.
I’ve explained it before, my practice was almost a moment for self flagellation, I had weaponised the teaching of the sutras to punish my body and to try to calm the howls of my own misery. My life force was a pilot light.
When I did my first Forrest session, I was shaking. I was asked to feel. The poses weren’t hard, nothing I couldn’t handle. But I was being asked to track sensation. To track subtle shifts. And to track how I felt about my own body.
It blew me open.
It felt like the moment in the Wizard of Oz when it goes technicolour (it’s pride month after all).
The tools I’ve learned help me navigate my own issues (issues I had since before I started yoga twenty years ago), both physical and mental.
It’s my hope that rather than seeing that little pilot light, that they see a swirling and boiling bonfire of energy.

I’m only smiling to be nice.
Today, during the most advanced pose of picking up my laptop case (not even my laptop in it) my back exploded into pain and within moments I was about a foot shorter and feeling all the usual pain biting hard.
I’ve had a really good period without this for months now.
If I sit and lean forwards like I’m about to tell a whimsical tale, I’m fine. If I, you know, stand up or try to walk, it’s a nope from my back.
This year my scans showed new issues with some of the discs in my lower back and arthritis in my facet joints beyond the normal wear and tear, but the only path I was given was epidurals every couple of months, and I don’t think that will help me that much.
I’m not looking for a fix, or for any good natured folks to get me to try their yoga style or anything. I’m just giving an update I hoped I wouldn’t have to give, but here we are!
Here’s to your health as I wouldn’t wish this on anyone.

Also, day two of pride. This feels homopho$ic

It’s day one of our retreat and we have just finished morning practice.
We arrived in the dark to lightning and torrential rain but have awoken to clear skies, birds singing and the heat of the sun.
