๐Ÿ’Ž golf is a game of limiting mistakes ๐Ÿ’Ž

Do you go out on the course with an expectation of score? Does the score play on your mind?

My last game was full of all kinds on inconsistencies. I missed 3 par 3 and made bogeys as well as holing a 9 iron from 160 for eagle on par 4. This game is full of ups and downs and when competing Iโ€™m looking too much into my score and go into turmoil when things are not planning out. As a coach and as a player, I can totally relate to you all with the level of frustration. We set this external focus of score and when we donโ€™t achieve it we feel like we fail.

Time to realign my process and stay away from being score related and stay committed to every process.

๐Ÿ’Ž making changes takes time ๐Ÿ’Ž

I made a commitment over 2 and half years ago with to adopt some changes to help improve my ball flight, turn my driving into a strength and help improve my bad shots. With lots of reps, practice, feedback and constant pressure testing the results are now a Biproduct of the process.

It takes time. We have a lesson and expect results straight away, but the refinement is through quality of reps and feedback.

โ›ณ๏ธ How to lower your scores โ›ณ๏ธ

When we think about lowering scores we try to make more birdies and push. Where in reality it is much more about limiting the errors. Tiger woods had a 5 rule focus.

The Tiger 5 Rules:

No bogeys on par 5s:

These holes are prime scoring opportunities; a bogey is considered a lost opportunity.

No double bogeys (or worse):

Avoiding catastrophic holes keeps a scorecard clean.

No three-putts:

Good lag putting is crucial for scoring well.

No bogeys with scoring clubs:
Avoiding bogeys from inside 150 yards (using wedges/short irons).

No double chips:
Ensuring that if you miss the green, you get down in two shots, not three.

Before you dive into technique, start with this and see what filtrates. Closely monitoring this and cutting out some of the above are key factors in shooting lower scores.

๐Ÿ™Client appreciation post ๐Ÿ™

Its always about the client and doing all we can together to get the best out of their games. I have been working with Nick for a while now and have made some subtle, yet mega effective changes to his game. Nick is a +2 handicapper.

Here is what he has to say:

No probs, plus 2 is hcap (+1.7)

Working with Ross has been excellent. Weโ€™ve worked on a blend of technical improvements and performance-based drills, using a few training aids to build better movement patterns and club control. Whatโ€™s stood out most is how the changes have been kept simple and transferable to the course. I feel I have a clearer understanding of my swing and greater confidence in applying it under pressure.

๐Ÿ’Ž Deliberate practice/training ๐Ÿ’Ž

Slower, more deliberate training allows the brain and the body to reprogram habitual movements patterns without reverting back to old habits.

It also helps to develop better rhythm and tempo.

I am also using an external cue of a knitting needle at the butt end of the club to help me align takeaway and backswing more on plane. My tendency is to lift arms away from body at the start, retract arm too far behind me and get stuck in downswing.

Doing this allows me slowly to start to change habit and layer on the new pattern. Adding speed is always a challenge but one to always conquer.

๐Ÿ’Ž #1 controlling low point ๐Ÿ’Ž

The biggest difference from elite golfers to club golfers is the ability to control where the club bottoms out.

To be a great ball striker it is non negotiable to hit ball first and ground second. Simple.

Next time your working in your game, ask yourself, where is my clubs lowest point in the arc. It should be after the after.

Comment below ๐Ÿ‘‡ how is your ball striking.
