MATCH REPORT 💛🖤

18th Newtownabbey 1–2 FC Mindwell

First Half

FC Mindwell made an excellent start, dominating the early exchanges and creating several attempts on goal.

Mindwell were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty, but PJ Quigley was unable to convert from the spot.

Quigley remained a constant threat down the left-hand side, while McNally and Taylor dictated the game from midfield.

Newtownabbey threatened occasionally from set pieces, but it was Mindwell who eventually broke the deadlock. Kane Rossiter chased down the full-back, won possession and raced through on goal. His initial effort struck the post, but he reacted quickest to turn home the rebound.

The hosts drew level before the interval when an error at the back led to a wide free kick, which was converted to make it 1–1 at half-time.

Second Half

The early stages of the second half were evenly contested, with both sides enjoying spells of possession.

Mindwell continued to push for the winner and were eventually rewarded. A trademark long throw from Dale Montgomery was met by the onrushing Rossiter, whose bullet header flew into the top corner to secure a deserved 2–1 victory.

It was also fantastic to see Nathan McCorry back in action following his injury, completing an impressive 60 minutes on his return.

A determined performance and another important win for the club.

Result - St Mary’s YC 0 - 3 FC Mindwell 💛🖤

FC Mindwell travelled to Portadown this afternoon to face St Mary’s Football Club in the second round of the Bob Radcliffe Cup, looking to continue our positive start to the season and secure a place in the next round.

First Half

Mindwell were a little slow out of the blocks and struggled to find our usual rhythm during the early exchanges. The hosts made it difficult for us to settle, with the opening stages proving tight and cagey as both teams battled for control.

Despite not being at our fluent best, Mindwell found the breakthrough after just 10 minutes. Kane Rossiter showed excellent awareness and striker’s instinct to react quickest to a loose ball inside the penalty area, rising to head home and give the visitors a 1–0 advantage.

The remainder of the half was closely contested. Mindwell enjoyed spells of possession without quite finding the quality in the final third to extend the lead, while St Mary’s continued to work hard and looked to create opportunities of their own.

The Mindwell defence remained disciplined and organised, dealing confidently with everything the hosts threw at them and ensuring we entered the half-time interval with our slender advantage intact.

Second Half

After the break, Mindwell began to move through the gears and displayed much more of the attacking quality we know the side is capable of producing. The passing became sharper, the tempo increased and the visitors began to take greater control.

That improved performance was rewarded in the 55th minute following a superb sweeping team move. Excellent build-up play opened the St Mary’s defence before the ball was worked into a dangerous area, where Oisín Ginesi arrived at the back post and finished confidently to double Mindwell’s advantage.

With momentum firmly on our side, Mindwell continued to push forward, and the third goal arrived just 10 minutes later through a brilliant piece of individual quality from Peadar McParland.

McParland expertly plucked a superb forward pass out of the air before driving at the St Mary’s defence. He showed excellent skill and composure to beat two defenders before calmly placing his finish into the bottom corner, making it 3–0 and putting the tie beyond doubt.

From there, Mindwell managed the remainder of the game professionally. The defensive unit remained resolute and well organised, dealing with any pressure from the hosts and showing real determination to protect the clean sheet.

Overall, it was another positive afternoon for FC Mindwell. While we may not have been at our free-flowing best during the opening 45 minutes, the response after the interval was excellent. Three goals, a clean sheet and progression to the next round made it another successful day for the players and coaching staff.

A special mention goes to Adam Campbell, whose commanding performance earned him the Man of the Match award.
