Prehistoric day on Eday, chambered cairns and monoliths, followed by some fun riding on the beach. The Surly Straggler and Moda Molto are both proving to be great choices for the two week trip. Interestingly Orkney has so far proved extremely quiet (especially given that it’s now mid season) with empty hostels and deserted beaches, pretty much the exact opposite to Skye and the West Coast.

Continuing our historical journey, the shop began around 1961 in a garage underneath a house in Rattle Ghyll, the house was and still is called Ghyllside. A chap called Ernie was the brains behind the operation and was a bit of an eccentric by all accounts. He was known for riding his invention a ‘mini farthing’ around the village and began his career in the cycle trade working in another bike shop in the village.

1981 and 2026, very little has changed in The Slack after 45 years, we were all astonished to find this wonderful period photo on a random Google search. Courtesy of Purley High School, fabulous to compare and contrast. The two kids sat on our window sill look rather bored as they wait patiently for the ‘fettling’ to be over!
