The doors that closed may have saved me.

So many stories I could share of doors closing that broke my heart. I thought it was because I had failed. Now I see that my inability to set boundaries would have did me all the way in and everything and everyone around me would have been impacted.

I’m naturally a giver…a helper, a strong advocate, strategic problem solver, and lover of people. This has worked in my favor and so many ways but it’s also been my Achilles heel.

Now, I know that.

I’ve learned not to shame myself because of it. Instead, acknowledge it and then strengthen my ability to set boundaries unapologetically. Surround myself with people who will respect them and hold me accountable for setting them.

I didn’t see the full picture then but now I do. And I’m so grateful I let those doors shut and didn’t allow myself to be torn down while trying to prop them open with my foot.

You’ve been quitting on the small things because you cannot see the results yet. I get it. In a world that praises fast results, the small steps may feel pointless.

Your 70-year-old self is being built right now…little by little in the ordinary, in the quiet, and in the choices nobody sees. It all matters. All of it is moving the needle.

All the late nights, extra effort, going above and beyond until above and beyond became our baseline. None of it moved the needle.

The decision was never about our performance. It was about their perception.

We cannot work our way out of someone else’s bias (read that again).

So we shift from asking how do I prove myself here and we start asking why are we still trying to?

I have learned that when we stop performing for people who were never going to applaud, we finally have the energy to build something that was always ours to build.

I used to think losing the passion meant something was wrong with me. So I’d recommit. Push harder. Remind myself why I started.

What if the drift was actually the direction?

There’s a difference between resistance and release.

Start where you are.
