Lost poll tip: get your old polls back, even the expired ones

Somewhere in your inbox there's a Cockpit link to the poll you ran at last spring's offsite. Probably. Unless you deleted the mail, or used your work address, or it's buried under 4'000 newsletters (none from us, by the way: we poll, we don't pollute 😉).

DirectPoll has no accounts and no passwords. Your e-mail address is the only thing that ties your polls to you. That keeps it simple, and it also means you can find your polls again from that address alone.

It's hiding in a place you might not expect: the delete button.

🔎 Open the cockpit of any poll saved with your address. If you have none at hand, create a new one with the same address and save it.
👉 Under Danger zone, click Delete poll, then the "delete all polls" link in the text below it.
✉️ You get an e-mail with a link to a page that lists all your polls, live and expired. Each one links straight to its cockpit, and the expired ones are marked.

Don't worry about the word "delete". Nothing is deleted unless you tick the polls and confirm on that page. Just looking is fine. The link works once and is valid for 60 minutes.

Here's the part most people don't know: an expired poll isn't gone right away. For about a year and a half after it expires, you can open its cockpit and renew it, and you get the questions and all the results back under the same links. That makes next year's team survey a lot less work, even if you forgot to save your poll now and then during the year.

And if you really do want to be forgotten, the same page deletes everything in one go, including your supporter status if you have one. Just be aware that deleted means gone for good. Not even we can bring a deleted poll back.

PowerPoint tip: start your poll before the QR code leaves the screen

You know the moment. You put up the QR code, and the room pulls out their phones. Some people scan right away, some are still unlocking, and someone at the back asks you to "wait, go back one slide, please."

So you wait. And wait. And the energy you built up drains away.

There's a simple fix: don't make the audience choose between joining and voting. Put both on one slide.

With the DirectPoll add-in for PowerPoint, you can place multiple DirectPoll shapes on a single slide. Put two of them side by side:

📱 Left: the QR code and join link, so latecomers can still get in
📊 Right: your first question, already open for votes and filling in live

Early people vote right away. Late people scan and catch up. Nobody waits, and the bars start moving while you're still talking.

Setting it up takes a minute. Each shape's Alt Text holds a Result link: point one at the QR code (no action) and the other at question 1 (with an action). The moment you reach that slide, your poll goes live on question 1, with no clicking and no switching windows.

Works in PowerPoint on Windows and on Mac.

How long does your audience usually take to get from "here's the QR code" to the first vote?

P.S. Yes, that's "yes" in eight languages. And go ahead, scan the code 😊

DirectPoll 3.0 is live at https://directpoll.com

It took a while to gather a team that could rebuild the whole thing, not just patch it. That team is here, and the new release is online.

New: PowerPoint add-ins for Windows and macOS, so live results show up right on your slides. A slide deck generated from your poll. A rebuilt app on every screen.

Still true: DirectPoll is and will be free, independent and ad-free. No account, no ads, no strings.

The new DirectPoll Plus is a handful of optional extras, like keeping a poll alive for a year or becoming a Supporter, each with the price shown before you pay.

Over the coming weeks we will go through the features one post at a time. This page is waking up again. Follow along, and go run a poll.
