Two years earlier I was in the spiral, chasing points and losing confidence. In B.C. I stopped chasing and went looking for the joy instead — and that season, the newspaper wrote the rest. The joy came first. The performance followed. I wrote about this in my book.

A few months after leaving Val-d'Or in the QMJHL, I was on the other side of the country. I wasn't chasing a league anymore — I went to the BCHL to fall back in love with hockey, and to bring everything I was learning about myself into my game.

#92 with the Saguenéens. I wanted the fresh start so badly that I showed up with an arrogance I wasn't even aware of — trying to look confident, hoping it would make me feel confident. Underneath, I was still searching for my flow.

This is how I learned about my first trade: a text from a friend welcoming me to Chicoutimi, before my own team had said a word to me. It shook me — I read it as proof they didn't want me anymore. It took time to see it as a new beginning.

Two months later I was back on the ice, smiling for the newspaper. Not long after that, I was traded.
