I sometimes wonder what would happen if people could see inside the brain of a dance teacher or studio owner.

It would not be neat.

It would not be quiet.

And it would probably look like 47 tabs open at the same time, with music playing from one of them, and nobody can figure out where it is coming from.

There would be a parent email that still needs an answer, a class plan for Tuesday, a recital idea that showed up at 2:00 in the morning, a student who looked a little sad last night, a teacher who needs a little encouragement, a prop that may or may not still be in someone’s garage, and a costume that still needs one more rhinestone, one more safety pin, or one more miracle.

And somehow, in the middle of all of that, we are also thinking about the child who finally smiled in class. The beginner who is starting to believe in themselves. The senior who is getting ready to move on. The parent who trusted us with the most important person in their life.

That is the part “normal people” may not always understand.

Yes, we run businesses.

Yes, we teach classes.

Yes, we plan schedules, performances, programs, and seasons.

But we are also carrying people.

Children.

Families.

Teachers.

Dreams.

And maybe that is why our brains never fully shut off.

Because this work is not just a job we go to.

It is a life we care about.

So if you know a dance teacher or studio owner who forgets where they put their coffee, answers a question before you finish asking it, or suddenly says, “Wait, I just thought of something,” please know this.

They are not scattered.

They are not dramatic.

They are just holding an entire dance studio in their head and heart.

How cool is that!

Are your kids interested in dance lessons? Well, you might be surprised by which animal they should take inspiration from. According to Akimbo Dance Studio in Kamloops, motivation for dancers comes from an unexpected source: the zebra.

Owner and director Kim Enns chose the zebra as the studio’s mascot for a simple but powerful reason—no two zebras share the same pattern of stripes. “No two zebras are exactly the same, and the same is true of people,” Enns explains. It’s a philosophy that shapes everything at Akimbo Dance Studio (ADS), where individuality is not only accepted, it’s encouraged.

A Studio That Feels Like Family
The word akimbo suggests confidence and presence—an apt description for a studio built on inclusivity and support. At ADS, every student is welcomed into an environment where they can grow at their own pace. “Every child who comes through our doors expresses themselves differently,” says Enns. That belief is reflected in the studio’s approach: instruction that fosters guidance, encouragement, and a strong sense of belonging.

For Enns, dance is about far more than technique. It’s a journey of self-discovery—one that builds confidence, resilience, and life skills that extend well beyond the studio. “Learning to dance is an enriching experience,” she says. “From preschool through to adulthood, it helps shape kind, self-assured, and caring individuals.”

There is more than dancing taught at ADS; respect, teamwork, and cooperation are woven into every class, creating a positive, open atmosphere where kids can thrive. The instructor team reflects that same diversity. Each brings a unique style and strength—whether it’s high-energy theatre, dynamic hip-hop, or technical training—ensuring that students connect with both the art form. It has not been a solo journey to get here, Kim assures us. “We are very much a team, and I certainly could not do this without the support of our great dance instructors.”

Growth, Opportunity, and Real-World Confidence

Being supportive doesn’t mean things can’t be inspiring, though. ADS challenges its dancers to grow, offering everything from recreational classes to a competitive team that performs across British Columbia. Those looking to go even further can enroll in the studio’s Emerging Educators program, which provides a pathway into teaching and helps experienced dancers transition into leadership roles—with an impact that extends beyond the studio walls. Students report feeling more confident, motivated, and inspired in their everyday lives, all from learning how combining individuality and teamwork creates something truly powerful.

Making Dance Accessible

Trying something new can be intimidating—for kids and parents alike. That’s why ADS offers trial classes, giving families a chance to explore dance without pressure. While the main schedule of classes runs from September to June, themed summer camps offer a relaxed, fun, and affordably-priced introduction to dance.

Affordability is a key part of the studio’s philosophy. Dance is already one of the more accessible extracurricular activities, but ADS goes further by offering bursaries and scholarships to ensure that no child misses out because of financial barriers. “There are always kids who want to dance, and sometimes, they just need a little extra help,” says Enns.

Gaining a Love of Dance Through Celebration

For many families, the first introduction to ADS comes through birthday parties. With packages starting at just $119, the studio offers fun, flexible, and stress-free options—from simple space rentals to fully hosted celebrations. “Our top package lets parents relax on what can otherwise be a stressful day,” Enns says with a laugh. “Come in, have fun, make a mess—and don’t worry about the cleanup.”

Built on Community

Enns’ own dance journey began in the late 1980s, shaped by Kamloops’ close-knit arts community. That sense of connection remains central to ADS today—and inclusivity is a cornerstone of the studio. Boys are encouraged to join, and students of all backgrounds, identities, and abilities are welcome. “Some of the best dancers in the world are men,” Enns notes, stressing that the art of dance is for everyone.

The support of the community has been rewarding, too. Things are hopping at the studio this spring, and while that is exciting, it means fewer programs than normal. “We are working at capacity right now, which means eliminating a few classes,” Kim explains, adding that toddler classes and others will likely be open again soon.

Best birthday party ever! Kids had a blast learning dance moves and playing games. Bonus is having the birthday girl’s instructor as party host!
-Sheridan Moss

We booked Akimbo for my 9-year-old daughter’s birthday party this year, and the kids had a blast! Ms. Tracy and Mr. Milo were amazing with the 10 kids. It was so relaxed for myself and hubby! There are different packages available. We did the one with a 30min dance lesson.

A Place to Belong
At its heart, Akimbo Dance Studio offers something deeper than dance instruction. It’s a place where dancers build confidence, form friendships, and develop skills that last a lifetime—all in an environment that remains accessible to families.

If you’re looking for a program that balances affordability with real personal growth, ADS helps young dancers take steps that truly shape their future. You can find out more on the Akimbo website, or call the studio directly at 250-374-5404.
