There is a certain cadence when building a progression like a pump-fake with a jab-step.

Try this 1v1 cut off drill.

I’ve been using this drill over the past 20 years to teach athletes how to close the gap on the first step and when possible… cut in front of the defender to hold them “hostage”.

Must have footwork for guards.

The hip swivel is one of the most simple and effective ways to freeze your defender.

One of the reasons this move has survived every era of basketball is because it works.

Michael Jordan used it. Kobe Bryant used it. And today you’ll see players at every level of the game using the exact same concept.

The fake drop-step isn’t designed to beat the defender. It’s designed to make the defender react.

The moment they bite, lean, reach or shift their weight.. the counter becomes available.

Great scorers don’t just master moves. They master the reactions those moves create.

Snatch-back (pull-back) like a pro player.

Coach Nolan teaching how to do continuous pull-backs. Works on footwork going both ways, handle speed & control, tying handle & footwork together.

One of the most misunderstood moves in basketball. A hesitation with a stutter step is NOT a travel.

The reality is that this move is completely legal when executed properly because the dribble never ends. The key is keeping the ball live the entire time. As long as the ball continues to bounce and the hand stays on top or to the side of the basketball, the player is still in a legal dribble.

This is one of the reasons great guards are so difficult to defend. They understand how to manipulate pace, freeze defenders and create separation without ever picking the ball up.

Coach Nolan demonstrating a hesitation with a stutter step while keeping the dribble alive from start to finish.

The details matter. The rules matter. Understanding both can completely change the way you play the game.

To all the elementary, middle school & high school players out there… one of the things and I can 100% tell you is that college and university coaches rarely start by asking, “Can they score?”

More often than not, the first question is:

“Can they defend at the next level?”

Defense may not always get the attention, but it earns trust, creates opportunities, and opens doors. The players who understand that early have a huge advantage.
