Athlete:

Today’s lower body session focused on developing force production, movement efficiency and tissue resilience in a way that transfers to the field.

Our main lift was paired with jumps and plyometrics to target the force–velocity spectrum. Strength work builds the capacity to produce force, while the jump and plyo work teaches the athlete to express that force quickly - which is ultimately what acceleration and change of direction demand in rugby league.

Unilateral movements were then layered in to target pelvic control, frontal plane stability and single-leg force production.

The accessory work targeted the posterior chain and lower-leg complex. Hamstring strength and calf capacity are critical for sprinting, deceleration and long-term injury resilience, particularly as athletes move into higher training loads through their teenage years.

At this age the goal isn’t to chase fatigue or numbers to make the athlete or the session look impressive. The goal is to build a physical foundation that allows the athlete to run faster, change direction better and tolerate the demands of their sport as they progress through the years.

A little update on my end

Firstly, a full recovery is expected and predicted.

The last few weeks have been the hardest thing I’ve had to go through, with the various medical procedures and appointments with many unknowns and possibilities to assess a mass and swelling in the armpit. After getting the results, the process to knock this thing over has started this morning and will last approximately 18 weeks.

I’ve never felt healthier and see this as something I really want to take head on and have seen today as almost game day and ready to get stuck in.

It’s amazing how your perspective of things can change in such a short time. Things that used to be seen as hard or challenging in all areas of life changes in an instant. The way you look at your family and everything in life is put into perspective very quickly. You never think this will actually happen to you and only happens to other people.

I’ve said to many people already, I’m not after sympathy, people go through hard things in life and go through a lot worse than I am, and I am aiming to get on with everything as normal the best I can. My main aim in this is to show my kids that hard things happen in life and you can overcome anything that is thrown your way. I’ve got the best family, friends and support network to get through the next few months.

The hat and beanie shopping has began.

The game’s getting faster, and the requirement to win the ruck has never been greater.

Collisions are won through an athlete’s ability to produce and direct force while maintaining control and stability through contact - it’s about being able to create and direct force efficiently and effectively.

I used to spend a lot of time running athletes through speed drills chasing perfect technique. Although they have a place, I now focus on providing the athletes with what’s actually going to make them better at their sport and more effective in the collision when carrying the footy.

We’re placing a big focus on jumping, hopping, skipping, bounding, and running fast — simple, high-output work that develops athletes who can accelerate harder, produce more force and win collisions.

Performance-based running and conditioning sessions now underway in Toowoomba.
Two training groups available to suit different levels of ability and experience.

Athletes from all sports use this program to prepare for pre-season and build the key physical qualities needed for performance — speed, power, and conditioning.

Online programming is also available for both field and gym-based training.
