๐ฃ Important Update for Members
Members may notice that a section of the venue has recently been temporarily fenced off by Council. This follows an Aboriginal Due Diligence assessment, during which a visual inspection identified an artefact scatter within the area of the proposed alignment of the sewer rising main for the new amenities building.
Aboriginal artefacts can include items such as stone tools, stone flakes created during tool-making, shell deposits, hearth remains or other objects that provide evidence of past Aboriginal occupation and cultural activity. At this stage, further assessment is required to better understand the significance of the material identified at the venue.
Council is currently considering options to minimise impacts on the project while ensuring that any identified Aboriginal cultural heritage is managed appropriately and in accordance with legislative requirements. This process may include undertaking an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment (ACHA), which would help inform any application for an Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit (AHIP). It is acknowledged that following these legislated processes may affect previously communicated project delivery timelines.
We ask all members and visitors to please respect the fenced area and to avoid entering this area.
Our club respects the importance of following the appropriate processes to protect and acknowledge Aboriginal cultural heritage. We are committed to working collaboratively and respectfully with Council and the Local Aboriginal Land Council to find a resolution that balances the preservation of cultural heritage with the future needs of our club. We appreciate the patience, understanding and ongoing support of our members and will continue to provide updates as further information becomes available.
