One of the true rugby legends in the Hunter has heard the final whistle.

From The Maitland Rugby Family to John’s - we are thinking of you and thank you for sharing him with us.

Vale John F. Miner OAM

The Hunter Rugby community joins the wider Australian rugby family in mourning the passing of John F. Miner OAM, one of the most respected and influential figures in Australian Rugby Union refereeing.

John's contribution to our game spanned decades and left an indelible mark on rugby, not only through his distinguished career as a referee but also through his tireless commitment to developing match officials and strengthening the game at every level.

His service to rugby was recognised with the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 1989 for his outstanding contribution to Rugby Union.

As a referee, John earned the respect of players, coaches and administrators alike. He was known for his calm authority, fairness, deep understanding of the Laws of the Game and unwavering professionalism. More importantly, he understood that referees were custodians of the game, ensuring rugby was played in the spirit for which it is renowned.

Beyond the whistle, John was a mentor to generations of referees. He freely shared his knowledge and experience, helping countless officials develop the confidence and skills to progress through the ranks. His influence extended well beyond the matches he controlled, shaping the standards and culture of refereeing across New South Wales and Australia.

John remained a passionate advocate for rugby officiating throughout his life and was recognised as a Life Member of the New South Wales Rugby Referees' Association, Newcastle Rugby Union Referees Association and Hunter Rugby, reflecting the enormous respect he commanded within the refereeing fraternity.

Those fortunate enough to know John will remember a true gentleman of the game - approachable, generous with his time and committed to ensuring rugby remained a sport built on respect, integrity and service.

His legacy lives on in every referee he mentored, every administrator he inspired and every player who benefited from his dedication to the game.

On behalf of Hunter Rugby Union, we extend our sincere condolences to John's family, friends and colleagues within the Referees' Associations and the broader Australian rugby community.

🏉 Ben Emmett 250 Games 🏉

Another year, another milestone for a man that lives and breathes our great game.
Ben lives life with plenty of balls in the air, and is involved in rugby in so many levels, but still finds time to join his brothers each weekend.
Saturday will be the 250th time he pulls on the Blacks jersey so come down and clap him on and celebrate accordingly after.
The Old Black Tractor 🚜 is a bit banged up but rumbles on.
