All levels welcome, free coaching for inexperienced players including juniors.

A few weeks ago at the Burnie Chess Club we also began our annual 2026 Allegro Championship. All games are 15 mins flat and we are playing 3 games a night. We have 19 entrants and it’s the biggest field we’ve had in recent times. After 3 weeks the competition is heating up with Jordan off to a flying start winning 8 of his first 9 matches. Ian and Dylan are close behind but have played less games. James and John are playing well and are right up there. Simon is also having his best tournament with some big wins already. There have been some big upsets early and it is looking like it’s going to be another fantastic tournament.

A couple of weeks ago at the Burnie Chess Club we completed our 2026 Club Championship.

This years tournament was the closest in decades and this years champion is Reg Harvey. Reg played extremely well the entire tournament and finished up on 8.5 from 10 matches. It is the 11th time Reg has won the title. He has won in 1974, 1978, 1979, 1983, 1984, 1989, 1990, 2017, 2019, 2023, and now 2026!!! Well done Reg. You are a true Club Champion!!!!

There was only 1.5 points between 1st and 5th, 1 point between 1st and 4th, and only half a point between 1st and 3rd!!!

Hi Everyone.

I haven’t been able to update the page for a few weeks so I’ll fill everyone in on what’s been happening over a few posts now.

The biggest news is many of you know is that our venue, The Vinnies Hub, has had to close. The building has been sold. So at the moment we are temporarily shut down. We can move into the new Vinnies Hub venue when it opens. But at the moment that won’t be until mid September. I will let everyone know more as soon as I know more. I’m pretty sure it’s still in Somerset and we should hopefully be back up and running in a couple of weeks.

Tonight the Burnie Chess Club will begin a new tournament. The Allegro Championship.
Each player gets 15 mins each flat. Unsure if it will be single or double round. That will depend on number of entrants. We will play 3 games a night. If you intend to play please let me know asap. With 3 games a night if you are going to miss more than a week please chat with me beforehand. We don’t want the tournament to drag out as the Club Championship has. Try to be there a bit early , say by 6:45pm, so we can add you to the draw. If you can’t make tonight but still want to enter let me know as I can add you as well.
There will still possibly be a couple of games going for our club championship tonight too but the rest of us will begin the Allegro.

Tonight at the Burnie Chess Club for those who can we will be finishing off our tournament games for the club championship.

No games were played last week. But this week may be the last week for this tournament. Whatever games aren’t played tonight may have to forfeits as we need to move on to the next tournament.

The next tournament we will play our Allegro tournament. We should start this next week.

Only 3 games were played last week in the Burnie Chess Club Championship. Caleb played Dylan in the biggest game of the night. After a massive 2 hour battle Dylan came out victorious in a very even game for the majority. In other games John defeated Jordan and Tyson played a super strong game to force a draw with James.

Caleb , John and Dylan currently sit in a 3 way tie for first spot. But if nobody can stop Reg in his last 2 games he will stroll his way into another championship.

Last week in the Burnie Chess Club Championship we saw things continue to heat up with some really big results going into the final 2 weeks. Firstly we saw tournament leader John suffer only his second loss going down to James in an epic battle. Dylan had to come from behind to beat Tyson after an early blunder. Caleb played 2 games beating both Simon and Blaze. Zac continued his recent dominance over Jordan with a big victory. And what ended up being game of the night Reg struggled for over 2 hours to come from behind to beat Leon. I’ve never seen so many players gathered around a table hoping Reg would lose in my life. Reg was down a rook for nearly 2 hours before Leon lost the rook back. That was too much for Leon who resigned leaving Reg amazed at how he came out victorious.

Caleb is now briefly the tournament leader as he has played an extra game than the pack. But if nobody can stop Reg in his last 2 games he will stroll his way into another championship. This is by far the closest club championship in a while and 5 members all have a chance to lift the trophy.

Last week at the Burnie Chess Club there were only 4 matches played of our 2026 Club Championship.

Before the round Morten unfortunately had to withdraw from the tournament. His 3 matches will still be rated but will not count towards the overall tournament score as he didn’t play half his games. So James, Reg and Jordan’s scores have all been adjusted accordingly.

In last weeks round Caleb got a stronger win vs in form Leon. Simon kept his winning streak going with a win over Jordan. Reg won a tough battle vs Zac. And Dylan came out victorious in a gruelling match vs James.

With these results and the previous mentioned ladder adjustments John is now the tournament leader with Reg, James, Dylan and Caleb all extremely close behind.

With about 3 rounds to go for most competitors and only one point between 1st and 5th, who will come out on top!!!

Over the last 2 weeks things have really began to heat up in our 2026 Club Championship. There have been some big games played that have shaken up the fight for the Championship. In week 6 John was on the ropes for 2 hour defending for his life when he got Dylan in time trouble and pulled out an amazing fork to win a rook and then the game. In week 7 tournament leader James and Reg fought out a tough draw, while John defeated Caleb to keep his streak alive and move to tie first on the ladder.
