Congratulations to Our Women’s Teams 🏏🐯

What a tremendous season for women’s cricket at the Cradle Coast Care Wynyard and Districts Cricket Club, highlighted by the outstanding efforts of our Jackson Motor Company (JMC) Women’s First Grade team, who earned a well-deserved place in this year’s Grand Final.

This success reflects the collective effort of players, coaches and supporters who continue to build a strong, connected culture and grow the women’s game in our region.

We would also like to acknowledge the terrific contribution of our Duck River Butter & Vault Cafe Bar Female Second Grade team, whose enthusiasm, improvement and commitment across the season have been vital to the strength and depth of our women’s program.

A special mention to Kalea Leary for her leadership of the program this season, and the support provided by Niamh Woodfield. Kalea's positivity on and off the field have played an important role in bringing the team together and driving this success.

Well done to all players, coaches and supporters on a fantastic season. The future of women’s cricket at our club is very bright, with ongoing strategy being collectively planned in the off-season to take us to new heights.

2025-26 Burnie Cricket League Awards - brought to you by Powerlinestas

Congratulations to our Burnie Cricket League Premiership teams, the Yolla Co-Op A-Reserve and the Third Grade on their outstanding victories this season. To see multiple teams achieve success on the biggest stage is a tremendous reflection of the commitment, preparation and teamwork shown across the year.

These results do not happen by chance; they are earned through hard work, strong off and on-field leadership, and a shared belief in one another.

We also extend our sincere commiserations to our Amy Davidson - Elders Real Estate Burnie Cubs team, who finished as runners-up after a terrific season. You represented the club with pride, resilience, and sportsmanship and there is no doubt that this experience will serve you well in the seasons ahead. Your effort and growth has been exceptional.

The success of our Burnie Cricket League teams this season underlines something very important: the emerging depth and junior talent within our club. It is clear that the future of the Cradle Coast Care Wynyard and Districts Cricket Club is bright, with young players stepping forward, learning the game the right way, and embracing the values that define us.

Well done to all players, coaches, volunteers, and families who contributed to this season.
We are proud of you all.

🏏 WDCC AWARDS – SENIOR MEN & UNDER 18s 2025–2026 🏏

The Cradle Coast Care Wynyard and Districts Cricket Club is incredibly proud to recognise the outstanding achievements of our players at our annual awards on Saturday night.

What makes this recognition even more significant is the profile of our First Grade side this season. Our group was filled with players in their early 20s, supported by a number of talented teenagers who stepped confidently into senior cricket. The nucleus of our side were young men at the beginning of their cricket journey, learning the game, competing hard, and representing the Wynyard colours with pride.

This is exactly what strong pathways look like.

The future of the Wynyard Tigers is extremely bright. With emerging talent continuing to come through our junior program, and with young players already making meaningful contributions at senior level, our club is building something sustainable and exciting for the years ahead.

These awards are not just a reflection of one season: they are a sign of what is coming through the Dixons Pharmacy First Grade, Rod Glover Legal Second Grade and Vinidex Under 18 teams.

Congratulations to all award recipients and to the coaches, captains, families, volunteers and teammates who support them along the way. We are proud of you all.

A special acknowledgement must go to Riley Stafford, who as Head Coach has overseen the development of our playing group and the collective successes achieved across the club this season, highlighted by the premierships secured on the weekend.

Riley has shown outstanding leadership in guiding and nurturing players of all ages, setting high standards while fostering belief and unity within our teams. At just 21 years of age, he has taken on the responsibility of captain and coach with maturity well beyond his years, and he deserves enormous credit for the culture, growth, and success we are now seeing across the Wynyard Tigers.

Women's and BCL Awards to soon follow....

A TRIBUTE TO BRETT LEE: Wynyard and Districts Cricket Club Life Member and Champion

On Saturday, the sun set on one of the great playing careers in the proud history of the Wynyard and Districts Cricket Club, as Life Member Brett Lee walked off the ground for the final time; bat in hand, premiership secured, and surrounded by his teammates from his beloved Tigers.

In a performance that summed up the man perfectly, Brett delivered when it mattered most: 69 runs from 72 balls and 3 wickets for 26 runs from 6 overs in the Third Grade Grand Final. Even at the very end of a long career, he was still competing, still contributing, and still leading from the front.

Made a Life Member in 2006, Brett’s record speaks for itself. Across 18 seasons of Cricket North West First Grade cricket, he claimed 395 wickets, an extraordinary achievement and a mark of remarkable durability, skill, and consistency at the highest level on the coast. With the bat, he was more than handy, compiling over 2,000 First Grade runs, often when his team needed resolve and composure.

After some family time, Brett returned to the club and spent many years in the lower grades, serving the club wherever he was needed. He never chased status or recognition; he simply played for the love of the game and the good of the team. Those seasons were not a footnote in his career; they were the foundation of it. They speak to his humility, his loyalty, and his deep commitment to the Wynyard and Districts Cricket Club and its people.

Brett has won multiple premierships on turf at both First and Second Grade levels, in both long and short form cricket, a testament to his competitiveness, adaptability, and sustained excellence across eras of the game. To finish his career with a Burnie Cricket League Third Grade premiership alongside his beloved Tigers is a fitting and poetic ending.

Yet statistics alone cannot capture Brett Lee’s true impact.

His contribution and influence on many players is hard to measure. Brett has always been a passionate coach and mentor, someone who invested his time freely in others—whether in the nets, on match days, or quietly offering advice that helped young cricketers find their way in the game. Generations of players at Wynyard, as well as many of his opponents, are better for having shared a dressing room, a training session, or simply a conversation with him.

A pioneer of Primary School Cricket, Brett’s impact and inspiration in years gone by laid the groundwork for opportunities that continue to benefit young people today. His commitment to introducing children to the game, fostering enjoyment, and building confidence through cricket is one of the quiet legacies he leaves behind.

At its heart, Brett’s story reflects one of our newly affirmed club values, "Connected - We are a connected community where relationships are central to our culture and wellbeing. We celebrate team success and honour the history of our club and those who have worn the Wynyard colours before us."

Few have lived this value more authentically than Brett Lee. He has connected generations of players, families, and supporters through his example, his generosity with time, and his unwavering loyalty to the club.

There was something deeply symbolic about Brett’s final entrance onto the ground at Wynyard High School on the weekend, and equally powerful about his final walk off the field with the bat. It was not just the end of a match; it was the closing of a chapter in the life of a player who has given so much to this club and community.

It is important that we take this time to honour Brett and celebrate his champion efforts. To acknowledge not only the wickets, the runs, and the premierships, but the character, the loyalty, and the example he has set for so many over such a long period of time.

As reported recently in The Advocate, Brett’s career has been described as storied, and rightly so. But perhaps the greatest measure of the man is not the statistics; it is the respect he has earned from teammates, opponents, and the wider cricket community over many decades.

Congratulations, Brett.
A champion player and coach. A Life Member.
A mentor, and, as many would say, a “life coach” to many.
And forever a Wynyard Blue, + now Tiger. 🐅🏏

🏏 WYNYARD AND DISTRICTS CRICKET CLUB: INAUGURAL AWARD

Rhys London OAM Certificate of Merit: Honouring Legacy, Celebrating Service and Our Club Values

Over the course of this past cricket season, our club had the privilege of celebrating Rhys London, who was formally awarded his Order of Australia Medal, a recognition that reflects a lifetime of outstanding service to sport and community.

It is entirely fitting that the Rhys London OAM Certificate of Merit has been named in his honour for the next ten seasons.

Rhys’ contribution to the Wynyard sporting community has been nothing short of extraordinary. A long-time First and Second Grade player, respected leader, and tireless contributor, he has given decades of service to the game and to the people within it. His leadership has always been grounded in humility, integrity, and a deep care for others: qualities that define the very best of community sport.

More than anything, Rhys is widely regarded as a true gentleman: someone who has carried himself with dignity, respect and sportsmanship throughout his playing career and beyond. His example has shaped the culture of our club and continues to influence generations of players who follow.

The Rhys London OAM Certificate of Merit has been established to recognise a club person who consistently lives out our club values of Respect, Professionalism, Service, Connected and Fun, someone who contributes selflessly to the success of others and strengthens the fabric of our cricket community.

On Saturday night, our Club President, Leighton Burr, formally introduced and launched our club values to the community. Leighton spoke eloquently and passionately about how important these values are to our club and how they guide our thinking, our decision-making, and our interactions: with ourselves, our teammates, our opponents, umpires and members of the wider community.

Importantly, Leighton also reflected on the process behind the development of these values. They were not created in isolation. They were shaped through consultation and meaningful opportunities for our members and community to provide input, identifying what we can now proudly describe as the pillars of our club.

Leighton made it clear that these values are not simply words on a page. They represent the standard we expect of ourselves and the culture we are committed to protecting. Our club will not compromise on its culture.

On Saturday night, we were proud to present the inaugural Rhys London OAM Certificate of Merit to a very deserving recipient: Matthew Wickham.

Matt has been a long-time contributor to our club and the broader cricket community, having dedicated more than 25 seasons to the game across the Myalla Tigers, Wynyard Cricket Club and now the Wynyard and Districts Cricket Club. His loyalty, service, and commitment to the development of others have left a lasting mark on generations of players.

Matt is known for his honesty and directness, but equally for the genuine warmth and care he shows to those around him. He is consistent in how he goes about his life, the same person on and off the field, and someone who quietly leads through example. His mentorship of younger players, particularly in Second Grade in recent years, reflects the very best of what community cricket is about.

Naming this award in Rhys’ honour ensures that his legacy will live on each season, recognising those who demonstrate the same commitment to service, leadership, and the spirit of cricket that he has embodied for so many years.

Pictured in the accompanying photos is Rhys with the award that now bears his name, and later, the presentation of that same award to inaugural recipient Matthew Wickham, a powerful symbol of legacy, continuity, and service within our club community.

Congratulations to Rhys, Leighton, and Matt. These are leaders who continue to shape the culture, standards and future of the Wynyard and Districts Cricket Club. 👏

🏏 WYNYARD AND DISTRICTS CRICKET CLUB: ANNUAL AWARDS EVENING 2025–26 🏏

What a special night we shared on Saturday evening as the Cradle Coast Care Tigers community came together to celebrate the season that was. It was an opportunity not only to recognise some terrific individual performances across all grades, but more importantly to celebrate the collective achievements of our teams and the spirit that defines our club. How good was the celebratory atmosphere?!?! What a large and dynamic club we have become!

A highlight of the evening was acknowledging the outstanding grand final efforts of our teams in our Powerlinestas Burnie Cricket League Program.
🥇 Yolla Co-Op A Reserve BCL Team – Premiers
🥇 BCL Third Grade Team – Premiers
🥈 Amy Davidson - Elders Real Estate Burnie Cubs – Third Grade Runners-Up

These achievements reflect the commitment, teamwork and resilience shown across the season, and we are incredibly proud of the way our players represented the Wynyard colours.

There were a number of special moments throughout the evening, including the presentation of major club awards and recognition of individuals whose contribution, service and leadership continue to strengthen our club on and off the field. Nights like this remind us that success is not measured only by results, but by the relationships we build and the community we create together. This was a big turnout....

Special congratulations to Dhanushka Lahiru "Larry" Kumara, who took out the Club Champion Award at the top level, as well as to Mason Hodgetts for his first batting average award in Men's First Grade - the prestigious John Cu***ng Memorial Trophy. Congrats also to Kalea Leary on her first club bowling awards in Women's First Grade, winning the average and aggregate trophies.

Special thanks to Matt Wickham for again catering for our Senior Dinner, after catering for our Junior Dinner earlier in the month.

Well done to Bill Lee (LM) for his Master of Ceremony duties, again undertaken with organisation, professionalism and humour. Credit must also go to our President, Leighton Burr, for his ongoing leadership, passion for the club and what we are building together. There is little doubt that within the club, and from externally, that we are building something very special at Tigerland.

📸 Please enjoy some photos and images from the evening below, with more acknowledgements, including team awards, to come throughout the week as we continue to celebrate what has been a great year for our club. Thanks to Christopher Keith McGuire for his ongoing contributions to our club through his excellent photography.

Burnie Cricket League Third Grade Grand Final Match Report
Wynyard Tigers Third Grade 7/175 defeated Amy Davidson - Elders Real Estate Burnie Wynyard Tigers Cubs 9/149
Third Grade won by 26 runs

The Burnie Cricket League Third Grade Grand Final delivered a special occasion for the Cradle Coast Care Wynyard and Districts Cricket Club, as both our Third Grade team and our Cubs team competed against one another for the premiership trophy; a moment that speaks volumes about the depth, growth, and direction of our club. 🐅🏏

Batting first, Third Grade posted a competitive 7/175 from their 40 overs, led superbly by Brett Lee, who produced a commanding 69 from 72 balls, striking nine boundaries in a knock that set the tone for the innings. He was well supported by Bec Simmo Davey (37) and Paul Hancock (21), while contributions throughout the order ensured the side carried momentum into the closing overs.

The Cubs responded with tremendous spirit and intent. William Elphinstone showed real determination at the top of the order with 34, while Matthew Allen (23) and Enoch Poole (30) provided valuable resistance through the middle stages of the innings. The Cubs continued to compete strongly throughout the chase, finishing at 9/149, falling just short but earning enormous respect for their effort and competitiveness on the big stage.

With the ball, Third Grade were again well served by Brett Lee, who claimed 3 wickets to complete a superb all-round performance. Support came from Paul Hancock and Kalea Leary, who each took two wickets, helping to apply sustained pressure throughout the innings and secure the result.

Congratulations to Third Grade captain Anthony Haneveer, who led his side with composure and pride throughout the season and on grand final day.

Brett Lee was deservedly awarded Player of the Match for his outstanding all-round contribution, a performance that reflected his experience, competitiveness and commitment to the team in a match of great significance.

While the scoreboard will record a Third Grade victory, this match represented something far bigger than a result.

Strong credit must go to Brady Chatwin for his leadership and commitment to the Cubs program. Brady has invested significant time and energy this season, coordinating the team, coaching the Under-14 group, and supporting the broader development of our young players. This has been a significant investment from Brady. His support of the Saputo Shield, the pre-season match played in Circular Head between our First Grade side and a Circular Head Invitational XI, was a real success and demonstrated his commitment to growing the game across our region.

There is no doubt the Cubs program has accelerated the growth of our players. This has been a deliberate strategy of our club to enhance opportunities for our players and support their development within a senior environment.

We would also like to take the opportunity to thank our Third Grade team for the way they have supported the Cubs throughout the season: learning to include them, encourage them, and reinforcing that while many Cubs are junior players, they are still considered senior players of our club, participating fully in our senior programs. That culture of inclusion and shared purpose is something we are extremely proud of and want to advance in the future.

A sincere acknowledgement must also be made of Nigel Harrison, who served as 12th man for the Third Grade side on grand final day. Nigel has been a valued member of the team throughout the entire season and, despite the disappointment of missing final selection, showed tremendous character and spirit in remaining fully committed to the group. His presence at the match, his support of his teammates and his willingness to be part of the team environment spoke volumes about his character.

It was particularly special to see Nigel included in the celebrations at last night’s annual dinner when the BCL Third Grade Premiership flag was unveiled. The way the club and his teammates rallied around him, ensuring he was recognised and included in that moment, reflected the very best of what our club stands for. The presentation of the flag and the inclusion of Nigel was a very special moment and a powerful reminder that he is a valued member of this club. Congratulations to those who organised this. It was a moment that captured the spirit of our community. 👏

More broadly, this occasion highlighted the spirit of family that sits at the heart of our club. We continue to see the unique opportunities that community sport provides; parents and their children, both male and female, sharing the field together, supporting one another, and creating lifelong memories through cricket. That sense of connection and belonging is something we deeply value and will continue to nurture into the future.

A sincere thank you must also go to umpires Guy Chalky Grey and Dale Hyland for their professionalism and their long-serving contributions to the game. Your service to cricket in our region is deeply valued.

And to Guy, thank you for your inspiring words after the match. Your words that captured the spirit of the day. We look forward to sharing these on this platform in the coming days.

Finally, we would like to acknowledge the outstanding support of our sponsors, whose commitment enables programs like this to thrive. Amy Davidson and Elders Burnie has very proudly supported our Cubs team this season, and we are sincerely grateful for their investment in the development of our young players. We also acknowledge Powerlinestas, sponsors of our Burnie Cricket League program, and Cradle Coast Care, the naming rights sponsor of our club. Their ongoing support plays a vital role in creating opportunities for participation, development, and community connection across all levels of our organisation.

And to outgoing club legend Brett Lee, no words can fully encapsulate your contribution to sport and to our club, Cricket North West and the Burnie Cricket League. Your leadership, commitment, and service have left a lasting mark on generations of players.

This grand final was more than a game.
It was a celebration of pathway, family, character and the future of our club.

Yolla Co-Op A Reserve Premiership Match Report 2025/26
Wynyard Tigers A Reserve 9/175 defeated Riana A Reserve 173
Wynyard Tigers A Reserve winning a thriller by 2 runs

In one of the most gripping finishes seen at Frederick Street in recent seasons, Wynyard Tigers A Reserve held their nerve to claim the Yolla Co-op A Reserve Premiership, defeating Riana by just two runs in a contest that showcased resilience, composure, and genuine team spirit. 🏆

After being sent in to bat, Wynyard faced early pressure, but the innings was anchored superbly by Daniel Gladwell, whose patient and disciplined 51 from 105 balls provided the stability the side needed on a challenging surface. His knock was a classic finals innings, absorbing pressure, valuing his wicket and allowing others to build around him. It was a performance fitting of the occasion, and one rightly recognised with Player of the Match honours.

The competition's leading player, Nathan King contributed a valuable 26 until being run out, while club champion Montana Bradley once again demonstrated her class on the big stage with a composed 27, helping to steady the middle order.

Late contributions from Life Member and Tigers stalwart Ashley Jones (17) and skipper Brennen Allison (4 not out)* ensured Wynyard battled through the full 50 overs to post 9/175, a total that always felt competitive in a grand final environment.

Defending 175 in a premiership decider requires belief, discipline, and collective effort: and Wynyard delivered exactly that.

Riana’s chase began shakily, with early breakthroughs setting the tone. Nathan King led the bowling attack superbly, while Montana Bradley again played a decisive role with the ball, removing key batters at crucial moments. The fielding group backed their bowlers with energy and intent, highlighted by strong work behind the stumps and in the ring. Tiger legend Jonty McCulloch outstanding with the gloves with two catches, a runout and crucial stumping.

However, as grand finals often do, the match built toward a dramatic finish. The last wicket partnership between Ian Townsend and Kane Walsh nearly carried Riana across the line, with both players showing tremendous composure and determination under pressure. Their resistance added real tension to the closing stages and demanded calmness and discipline from the Wynyard group, who held firm when it mattered most, seeing the final wicket falling to Gladwell, with McCulloch's stumping proving to be the moment that mattered.

Special acknowledgement must go to Brennen Allison, not only for his contribution on the day, but for his leadership across the season. As Powerlinestas BCL Coordinator and Captain of the A Reserve team, Brennen has set the tone for professionalism, organisation, and connection within the group. His steady presence and commitment to the club have been instrumental in building a team environment capable of delivering on the biggest stage. Fittingly, Brennen was awarded the Darcy Leno Memorial Award for WDCC Club Person of the Year.

In the end, it was Wynyard’s composure in the field; sharp catching, disciplined bowling, and a relentless commitment to each other, that ensured Riana were dismissed for 173 in 45.2 overs, handing Wynyard the premiership in dramatic fashion.

Premierships are hard-earned. This one was earned through professionalism, teamwork, leadership, belief and fun.

Congratulations to every player, coach, volunteer, and supporter who served in what is a tremendous achievement for the Cradle Coast Care Wynyard Tigers. 🐅
