The Push-Up Challenge playing catch up…. Life happens, we get in our own heads, all the reasons, and suddenly days have passed. What matters is staying kind and patient with ourselves and getting back up again. Exercising and having things such as this challenge or someone to check in and keep you accountable definitely helps. Ready and eager to finish strong šŸ‘ŠšŸ½šŸ’ŖšŸ½ mentalhealthmatters

Credit (and thanks) to
Because I have been battling myself over the decline in my push-up challenge this past week and this sums up the battle pretty well. It also helps me bring understanding, patience and forgiveness to myself because there are many things that affect our mental health and sometimes despite all our best intentions things do fall apart, however what matters most is what we do when that happens

The Push-Up Challenge Day 15
Although I’m on day 14. A massive day of push-ups but what is more alarming is what this number represents. 218 to represent there are just 218 practicing Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander psychologists in Australia. This makes up less than 1% of all psychologists practising nationally. Especially considering first Australians experience significantly higher levels of mental illness than other Australians. First Nations Australians’ history of trauma, loss and disconnection from culture have contributed to complexities surrounding mental health issues and diagnoses. When seeking mental health care, lack of cultural awareness can be a common barrier faced by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
It’s vital that First Australians be represented in the Australian mental health care industry. Increasing the number of First Nations psychologists can encourage help-seeking behaviours and promote mental health literacy among First Nations peoples. It is also an important factor in helping to deliver culturally sensitive mental health care.
First Nations peoples typically view mental health through a holistic lens, preferring to define it as ā€˜social and emotional wellbeing’, which encompasses connection to land, culture, spirituality, ancestry, family and community. One service that focuses on culturally sensitive care is 13YARN (13 92 76), which offers callers the opportunity to talk with a trained Lifeline Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Crisis Supporter

Although I seem to have lost a day…And am up to Day 13šŸ¤·šŸ½ā€ā™€ļøThe terror this message inducesā€¦šŸ˜³ Especially after 150 push ups to represent that 150 minutes of exercise outdoors a week improves mental health. That could be a run, a walk, a bike ride, a sport, a swim, even playing at the park or kicking a ball around, with your kids or family. It could be walking to run errands or do some shopping or wandering a local market. Or an outdoor exercise session such as a bootcamp or yoga. You could take your usual exercise into your yard. Mix up your usual routine, try something new

The Push-Up Challenge Day 12
This week is International Men’s Health Week, an important time to raise awareness for men’s physical and mental health and wellbeing. Research indicates that globally, on average, one male dies by su***de every single minute.
Just let that sink in. In the time you take to read this, another male life will be lost to su***de. As a daughter, sister to brothers, a mum to three sons and a wife to a husband who’s father and brother have sadly became part of these statics it does hit hard. According to the National Study of Mental Health and Wellbeing 2020-21, only about a third (37%) of males with a 12-month mental disorder saw a health professional for their mental health, compared with more than half (55%) of females.
The harmful misconceptions surrounding mental health disproportionately affect males in our society. This is largely due to the common stigma that having a mental illness or reaching out for help displays weakness, hence not aligning with traditional expectations of masculinity. The promotion of open discourse between men of all ages regarding mental wellbeing is important in reducing stigma and changing the harmful stereotypes surrounding masculinity. Seeking help or checking in is a sign of strength. As is letting your family and mates know they’re not alone and they are loved. For those without family and friend there are services you can access for support. Let’s keep pushing for better

The Push-Up Challenge Day 11
Today is a rest day. Unless you’re like me and have a day (or more) to catch up. I have the 196 from yesterday to do. I have shared the slides from , this day may be a trigger for some and quite close to home like it is for our family. Which also makes it one of the most significant days I do in this challenge. Please never feel like you are alone or have no other choice or option or that you not being here will be better in any way. There are many resources and places to go for help. Use them. I’ll tag some too https://mensline.org.au/ ***deawareness ***deawareness

The Push-Up Challenge Day 7 I spent more time procrastinating the number of push-ups than actually doing them. A pretty typical way our minds work. Today was 210 push-ups to represent the 21% of Australians who have had to take time off work due to poor mental health in the past twelve months. Our working lives play a huge role in our overall mental wellbeing. Australians spend, on average, about one third of their time working, so it’s very important that our workplace is somewhere we feel safe and supported. Factors commonly affecting workplace mental health include high levels of stress, job insecurity, workplace harassment or discrimination, and a lack of support or access to resources. On the other hand, high job satisfaction, strong workplace relationships and a good work-life balance can significantly improve our mental wellbeing. Workplaces that promote mental health awareness and whose employees feel supported have been shown to have better staff retention, less absenteeism and increased productivity. It is good to see many workplaces now recognising the importance and need to support mental health. (Again adapted from , they share a wealth of information to support our daily push up amount)

Hell to the NO. Anyone telling you that you can’t do something or making you feel that you need to prove anything is NOT your person. The only person you need to prove anything to is YOURSELF. That is your mission.
