Another special one for STATE6.

Really grateful to have had the opportunity to sit down with Nelson “Nelly” Davis and hear his story.

Having spent so much time around the Willagee Bears throughout the past season, it was good to sit down with Nelly away from the footy field and get to know the man behind the coach.

We went right back to where his coaching journey began, with Nelly bringing in some old photos and sharing stories and memories that mean a lot to him.

We reflected on that unforgettable premiership-winning season, the highs and challenges of 2026, and his decision to step away from coaching.

This was actually the longest STATE6 episode I’ve recorded so far. Batteries were running flat, memory cards were dropping off like flies, but we kept rolling and got there in the end!

Plenty of laughs, stories and genuine conversation throughout.

I’m genuinely honoured that Nelly took the time to come in, open up and share his journey with me. I’ve got a lot of respect for what he’s contributed to the Willagee Bears and the people around him.

Massive thanks to Nelly for being part of STATE6.

🚨 ANNOUNCEMENT | 2027 FIRST GRADE HEAD COACH

The Willagee Bears are proud to announce Shae Smith as our First Grade Head Coach for the 2027 season, taking over from Nelly Davis, who led the Bears to a premiership in 2025.

Shae steps into the role following another successful season, guiding our Reserve Grade side to the 2026 Minor Premiership, after previously leading our Third Grade side to a Premiership in 2025.

A long-serving and highly respected member of the Willagee Bears family, Shae’s contribution to this club goes far beyond coaching senior football.

From developing our juniors to turning up at training sessions and lending a hand wherever needed, Shae has consistently demonstrated what it means to put the club first.

A mentor, role model and an integral part of the Bears community, his dedication and commitment have earned him the respect of players, coaches and supporters across all grades.

A well-deserved opportunity for someone who has given so much to this club.

Congratulations, Shae. We look forward to seeing you lead the Bears into 2027! 🐻🔴⚫
