Down south has plenty of unreal swimming spots but every location comes with hidden dangers 🚩

If you’re heading down south for Leavers, brush up on how to recognise risky conditions before you get in hot water.

🔹 Check the conditions before you get in
🔹 Check the depth before you jump
🔹 Swim between the flags
🔹 Stay close to your mates
🔹 Keep clear of the water after drinking alcohol
🔹 Speak up when something looks risky

Being a Mermate means looking out for your friends, speaking up when something feels unsafe and choosing another spot when the risks do not stack up 🧜‍♂️

Take a few seconds, scan before you swim and make sure the whole group gets home safely 💙

Alcohol and water are a bad mix 🚫

Heading to Leavers? If you’re drinking, stay out of the water and look out for your mates.

Alcohol slows your reactions, affects your balance and clouds your judgement, which can make time around the water more dangerous.

If you’ve been drinking alcohol, stay on dry land, keep back from slippery edges and save the swim for another day.

Grab some food, keep the party on land and make sure everyone gets home safely 💙

What exactly is BeachFest? ⛱️

BeachFest is the ONLY official beach party of Leavers WA!

Held each year at Meelup Beach on the Wednesday of Leavers Week, this giant beach party is brought to you by Be A Mermate and Leavers WA with a simple mission to help you and your mates have an awesome day while staying safe around the water.

Expect DJs, food trucks, inflatable water activities, beach games and a quiet zone when you need to reset before heading back into the action ☀️🎶

‼️BeachFest is only open to four-day Leavers wristband holders.

There’s still time to join the Be a Mermate volunteer team at Leavers and Meelup BeachFest.

Spend a week in Dunsborough working with other volunteers and gaining hands-on experience in harm reduction, health promotion and water safety.

You’ll help run BeachFest activities, connect with Leavers and support young people to make safer choices around the water.
