Vale Steve "Beaker" Robinson
The UWAWPC is saddened to announce that Steve Robinson OAM has passed away after his protracted and courageous battle with MND.
A Rhodes Scholar and originally hailing from Zimbabwe, Steve arrived at the club in 1990 soon after his time at Oxford. With a strong physique and an equally powerful, charismatic voice, Steve soon made his mark in the Perth water polo community and beyond. Steve was in our A Grade premiership winning team in the season of 1993/94 and went on to play in many Senior Men's premiership winning teams in the decades after. Steve was a key member of many UWAWPC Master's trips to international tournaments in recent years. Post game parties back at Steve's houses were legendary with sing-a-longs to Steve playing the piano well into the early hours. Steve dressing up as Santa at club Christmas parties featured throughout the 90's.
A keen open water swimmer, Steve swam to Rottnest solo 4 times and also completed crossings as a duo and teams with UWAWPC club mates multiple times. He became a pivotal figure at Superfins in August 2017 when his son, Keith, joined the club. As treasurer, his involvement in Superfins spans roles such as Pantomime Writer and Director, organising various open swimming activities, and coordinating team entries for the annual Busselton Jetty Swim.
Outside of the pool, Steve left an indelible mark on community organisations, having served on the boards of the Centre for Cerebral Palsy (now the Ability Centre), Woodlands Primary School (the main sports oval is named after him) and he chaired an Aboriginal charitable organisation. Steve was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division in 2024 for his commitment to community service.
In recent years, Steve became an inspirational advocate and champion for those living with MND, and an active member of the Motor Neurone Disease Association of WA community. He engaged in many fundraising initiatives including a skydive over Rottnest in 2024.
A musician, a composer, a playwright, a poet, a published author, and a long time Little Athletics coach, Steve Robinson had many talented gifts that he generously shared with those around him with good humour and his big booming laugh.
Our thoughts and condolences go to Rose-Anne, Keith, Emma and Lucy, to his extended family and to all his friends. The world has lost a remarkable person and all those who knew and loved him will miss Beaker immensely.
