As we approach the Winter solstice, a gloomy start to the day and the threat of a possible shower seemingly could not deter the 20 entrants in today’s Stableford event. However, and suffice to say, the anticipated ‘crack’ of the shotgun start was soon overshadowed by the ‘crack’ of torn heart muscles by 3 players as the balance of the field migrated to their starting positions. With a further player ‘retired hurt’ the event quickly morphed into a survival-of-the-fittest.

Good to see Tony Carter and Brian Collins committed to the task, having paused for a ‘moment of reflection’ after last week’s false start.

Bruce Fraser (7) was the best performer of the day with 34 points to win A-grade followed by B-grade winner Peter Semmens (24) 32 points.

Countbacks were required for the runner-ups with Mike Hoiles (14) 32 points edging Tony Carter (12) in A-grade and similarly, Brian Collins (23) 29 points from Jenny Svendsen (26) in B-grade.

Other scores:
Michael Smitheram (22) 28 points
Bubba Watson (24), PJ Cushen (13), Jim Alsop (27), Rob Taylor (20) 27 points
John Dawson (14), Kellie Spry (31) 26 points
A log jam for kitchen duties where Nifty Clark (24) came out of hibernation to claim the honour from Geoff Pickles (22) and Kevin Taylor (14) 24 points.

NTP’s: A-grade 6/15th Mike Hoiles; B-grade 3/12th Peter Semmens

The 7:30 Report Wednesday 3rd June.
Winter arrived for today's Bendigo Bank June Mug o' the Month stableford.
Despite several softies pulling the pin, resilient mountain men and two mountain women braved the elements that threw up a mixture of rain, mist, wind and the odd welcome appearance of sunshine.
Kevin Taylor (14) overcame the challenges to return 37 points and take the mug with Peter Semmens (24) a stroke back.
Other scores:
Trunks Hoiles (14) fresh from his multiple Club Championship honours picked up the A grade runners up with 34 points.

The Gisborne Foodworks May Monthly Medal doubled as the final round of the club championships. The runaway winner was C grade's Mike Smitherm (24) nett 62. Patrick Doyle's 75 was the best stroke score of the day on countback from Jarod Plowman. Both Darren Mantynen (10) and Hayden Phillips (14) played to their handicap to snare A and B grades respectively.
NTPs Darren Mantynen, Jim Hynes and a brace to Jarod Plowman

In what must be seen as a changing of the guard, the usual names appearing on the Club Champion trophy in the past decade have been Alex Fraser and Jim Hynes. Not so this year with brothers Patrick and Darcy Doyle prominent at the top of the leader board over the past three weeks of championship golf.
In a tight finish, Patrick prevailed with 217 a stroke better than his brother, with Jarod Plowman a further stroke back on 219.
B and C grade gross winners were Stuart Gunnell 244 from Mike Hoiles 252 and Sean Bassett 279 a single stroke better than Mike Smitheram.
Handicap winners by grade were Jarod Plowman (7) 198, Mike Hoiles (14) 208 and Mike Smitheram (24) 208.
The Seniors gross win went to Hoiles on countback from Tony Carter 252 while the nett went to Mike Smitheram.

The 7:30 Report-Wednesday 27th May
In the words of Steeleye Span, it was a very 'Misty, Moisty Morning' for today's team event...a 3 person gentsomes competition with a random draw for teams.
In a tight competition, winners were mathematically challenged Karl Pongracic, Mike Gorman and Wayne Burgess with 84 points, down from their original estimate of 87.
Runners up went to Brian Collins, Bubba Watson and Mike Smitheram 83 points.

Leaving a countback to determine the recipients of the plates to the th*****me of Jenny Svendsen, Shooter Dawson and Rob Taylor, up against Tony Carter, Peter Semmens and Keith Miles.
Team Carter's inward nine was 41 points while team Shooter pipped them by a single point.

NTPs to Walrus 3/12 and Mike Smitheram 1/10
Birdies recorded by Smitheram and Scanlon on the 10th and Walrus on the 15th

This weekend is the third and final round of the Club Championships as well as doubling for the Gisborne Foodworks May Monthly Medal.
Next Wednesday will be the Bendigo Bank June Mug o' the Month stableford.

23/05/2026

The second round of the Club Championships continued with the weather conditions more suited to sailing than golfing. Blustery winds from multiple directions made choice of club challenging.
A grade and overall winner was Jarrod Plowman (7) nett 65, B grade Mike Hoiles (15) nett 68 and C grade Hamsih Allen (27) nett 69. Darcy Doyle (2) returned the best gross score of 70.
In the overall gross standings after the second round, Darcy Doyle leads his brother Patrick (4) by just two strokes at 140. Stuart Gunnell (12) heads B grade with 162, while Sean Bassett has a five stroke lead in C grade with 188.
The nett handicap results have Jarrod Plowman leading with 130, Stuart Gunnell nett 138 has a narrow two stoke lead from Terry Bonello while Hamish Allen's nett 143 has several players within a four stroke striking distance.

Sad news was conveyed to MMGC of the passing of Mike Langmaid. The Langmaid family have a long association with MMGC through his sons, Jonno, Ben and Jerome, and while Mike has been absent from the club of recent times, his involvement over a long period of time should be acknowledged.
The service will be held at St Brigid's this Friday 22nd May commencing at 11am.
Vale Mike Langmaid

The 7:30 Report Wednesday 20th May.
What a contrast between today's benign conditions for our midweek stableford competition in comparison to Saturday's blustery opening round of the Club Championships.
