Here’s an awesome teaching moment with my friend Tracey.
What we’re sorting through is “rules we’ve given ourselves”. In this case, the rule was about the exercise being over once our feet came away from the poles.
We learn rules from people we learn from. Training programs and many teachers tell us that there’s one way and one way only. No questions, seeyalaterbye.
But what if we don’t fit the rule?
In a lot of cases, most actually, we don’t fit. And this can be super frustrating because we can’t progress on our own.
What we’re figuring out here is how to move past the rule in a way that promotes learning and discovery rather than “I’m telling you….”. Being told is just not helpful. Being allowed to make up your mind no matter how long it takes IS helpful.
Have you given yourself and your clients rules? (Eg, the neutral pelvis rule, which I used to hold onto for dear life). Have you been able to walk away from those rules?
Let’s hear them in the comments below 👇🏼
If you’re in Melbourne on Nov 14, we’ll be debunking a tonne of rules at Sunny Moves Seaford and we’d bloodyblove to see ya ✌🏽💙
