Statement from the Campaspe Park Raceway Committee of Management and Echuca Harness Racing Club
The Campaspe Park Raceway Committee of Management and the Echuca Harness Racing Club are deeply concerned by reports that several dogs have become seriously ill and, in some cases, died after being walked in an area near residential properties on the eastern side of the Raceway in recent days.
We only became aware of these distressing reports yesterday evening following advice that three dogs had died within a matter of hours after being walked in the area on Monday, 15 June.
The Raceway can confirm that neither its employees, contractors, officials nor representatives have placed bait, poison or any other harmful substances in this area.
Given the nature of these reports, we have notified Victoria Police, Campaspe Shire Council and the RSPCA. We understand that the matter is being investigated and will continue to cooperate fully with the relevant authorities.
We are concerned that a toxic substance or poison may be present in the area. There is also the possibility that any such substance may have been placed with malicious intent.
As a precautionary measure, access to the affected area has been restricted where possible, and warning signs are being erected today to alert members of the public.
In the interests of public and animal safety, we strongly urge dog owners and other pet owners to avoid this area until further notice.
