Here is the grading panel from last night’s segment of this year’s Black Belt Promotion.

Our Black Belt Promotion takes place over four separate segments. Last night focused on reviewing kata, weapons, and the candidates’ personal statements. It is amazing to witness the personal journeys and experiences of perseverance leading up to a black belt promotion.

The black belt panel makes corrections, observations and comments, but they also support and encourage each candidate, ensuring that they are pushed to their individual limit, given their circumstances and personal context.

Attendance by our black belts isn’t required, but they come to sincerely support and encourage the candidates, just as others supported and encouraged them during their own promotions.

Every black belt promotion is therefore different. We use the same framework that hundreds of black belts have gone through for almost 30 years, but every person’s experience is uniquely their own.

This is an important part of our Jin Sei Ryu Karate-Do culture. Black belt promotions are uniquely personal experiences, but you make that journey with a community. Osu!

This morning, we received our Nanadan certificates from Kancho Wong.

We are very fortunate to have Kancho Wong as our Okinawan Kobudo teacher. For several hours every week, for many years, he has patiently and privately taught us Kobudo from the Matayoshi, Kinjo and Wong lineages.

This training has complemented more than 40 years of Bukijutsu training through our Kyokushin and Seido lineage. Both traditions have influenced the development of the Jin Sei Ryu Karate-Do weapons syllabus.

Thank you, Kancho Wong, for your teaching, wisdom and friendship. We are very grateful to continue learning from you.

One of my students asked me yesterday if this was me.

Yes, it was! This was a very memorable kata performance for me in 1996 at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center. If you listen carefully, you’ll hear Shuseki Shihan Oliver encouraging me during the kata.

It brings back some great memories.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

A new group of our Junior 1st Kyu students from all over Sydney are now training together each Sunday morning.

Some of these students started karate when they were only 4–5 years old and have been training with us for many years.

They now have another 12–18 months of training and preparation before attempting their Junior Black Belt promotions.

It is great to see them reaching this stage of their karate journey and training together as one group.

Today's general class was a wonderful example of what we have been working to build at Jin Sei Ryu Karate-Do.

Training together were four different groups of students. Our adult kyu grades included three students who first came to us through our Golden Warriors program. Two students from our IGS Primary School program are now making the transition into our regular teens program. We also had two junior black belts who began their karate journey with us when they were only five or six years old. Alongside them were several of our senior black belts.

Different ages. Different ranks. Different starting points. But today they were all sharing the same dojo floor and practising the same karate-do.

For me, this is what a strong karate community should look like. Some people discover karate as children, some through school, some as teenagers, and some much later in life. The important thing is that there is a pathway for each of them to continue learning, growing and, eventually, helping the next generation to do the same.

In Jin Sei Ryu Karate-Do, our Basic Self-Defense syllabus is not simply a collection of techniques.

As students progress, the same core material is revisited through increasingly sophisticated concepts.

Kyu Grades — Basic Self-Defense: Zenkutsu-dachi no kamae

Students begin with a strong, structured stance, learning the fundamentals of movement, distance, timing and effective technique.

Black Belts — Intermediate Concepts: Shizentai no kamae

As students develop, we move toward a more natural posture. The emphasis shifts to relaxed readiness, adaptability and responding effectively without relying upon a formal stance.

Yondan+ — Advanced Concepts: Seichūsen (正中線)

At the advanced level, students explore the centre line, understanding the relationship between their own centre and their opponent's, while refining positioning, angles, movement and the direct application of technique.

From structure, to natural movement, to the application of underlying principles.

Same foundation. Deeper applications.

After our trip to Japan earlier this year, we started a special weekly Zoom class for our Rokudan and above.

The class gives our senior instructors from branches around the world an opportunity to train together, practise our Rokudan kata, review the senior syllabus, and ask questions about the finer details of our practice. We have separate online training sessions for Sandan, Yondan, and Godan, respectively.

This week, rokudan and nanadan came together to review our Eku kata.

Thank you to everyone for making the effort to train, particularly across different countries and time zones.
