BREAKING NEWS: Humpback whales underwater 😱 🐋 While diving at Saxon Reef, Divers Den guests today were treated to an exceedingly rare underwater sighting of a migrating humpback whale, captured by our onboard photographer Song ().

Most people are lucky enough to spot humpback whales from the surface during their migration. To come face to face with one while underwater on a dive is the kind of moment you never expect and never forget. Encounters like this are exceptionally rare, with these ocean giants typically passing through offshore waters during their annual migration.

Each winter, thousands of humpback whales travel more than 5,000 kilometres from Antarctica to the warmer waters of Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef to breed, calve and raise their young before returning south. August is right in the middle of this incredible migration, with whales regularly passing the Cairns coastline and outer reef.
