Does Classical Pilates actually need less purity and more technique?

I’m not convinced it does.

Perhaps what it needs is more teachers who understand the philosophy underneath the method.

And perhaps less telling us what it needs to be.

Could we just leave the method alone for a minute, and actually try to understand it by doing the work as it was given to us?

Perhaps it really is that simple.

Because the physical work is only the tip of the iceberg.

At JOE Contrology Studio, we don’t believe independent practice comes from being allocated a time slot to watch a screen.

We believe it comes from learning the system.

Our goal is to help students develop the understanding, awareness, and confidence to make decisions for themselves. To understand the exercises, the progressions, and the purpose behind the work, and ultimately to take ownership of their own practice.

What is Joe’s Gym?

“Joe’s Gym” is an affectionate nickname used within the Contrology community to describe Joseph Pilates’ original studio and the unique open studio environment he and Clara created.

At 939 Eighth Avenue in New York, Joseph Pilates created more than a place to exercise. He created a system.

Clients came to practise. They worked on the apparatus, learned the order, developed their bodies, and built mastery through consistency, discipline and dedication.

It wasn’t a class format. It was a practice.

Almost 100 years later, JOE brings that same open studio spirit to Brisbane.

A place to practise the method.
A place to learn the system.
A place to experience Contrology as it was intended, as a complete practice.
