Cape Coastal Rowing Club We are a Coastal Rowing Club based in Simon’s Town, Cape Town. Join us to learn, master & discover sea rowing! 🐧 CVID awareness continues.

As a recreational club who teaches proficient rowing of sea sculls for optimum enjoyment on the ocean, we are well aware that competitive school and university rowing has been taking place on dams and rivers in South Africa for generations. Since May 2011 a growing number of people have been participating in recreational coastal rowing in Cape Town too. This initially took place from the naval bas

e at Simonstown, then moved to our fabulous home base at False Bay Yacht Club. Regular outings to bodies of water elsewhere in the region, including the Berg and Breede Rivers, Langebaan, Churchaven, and Hermanus lagoons, Stanford and Stilbaai Rivers, Clanwilliam Dam, and Cape Point Reserve. And more recently as far as the Cowie River in Port Alfred. The Cape Coastal Rowing fleet now includes a range of quads, doubles and singles. This site provides updates on developments, learn to row program, and a contact point for those interested in joining in. No better way to view African Penguin, Dophin and Whales of all sorts along our routes. Often in our company are the friendly Cape Fur Seals, Southern Right and Humpback whales and the magnificent bird life of False Bay. What a day indeed! (Continued: Part 2).

In May our home-base town hosted the Simonstown Adventure Festival, and we tagged along to hosted the Cape Coastal Regatta at FBYC in Simonstown (2nd running now) — and it was a proper celebration of our club, the sport, and the cheeky, dynamic vibes that make coastal rowing so addictive.

We welcomed every Western Cape Rowing Club who could attend: totaling 20 crews, 80 rowers, 2 high school crews, 3 university crews and 3 open club crews. Across: Junior, Senior and Masters categories. Big turnout, even bigger vibes. 😁

Regatta Highlights:

🚣🏻Juniors brought the noise — Bishops raced Lawhill for the first time, and Bishops smashed the 1.8 km course in 7:17 (the second-fastest time of the day). Future coastal stars in the making!

🚣🏻Senior racing was epic: UCT, UWC, Hout Bay Rowing Club (new club!), and composite WP crews duked it out. Hout Bay held on for the day’s fastest time — 7:14. Respect!

🚣🏻Masters served up the drama: our friends from Alfred’s Rowing Club pulled off a thriller, beating Cape Coastal Rowing Club by 0.10 seconds — talk about a photo finish!

🚣🏻We started the day battling winds and a lively swell (coastal rowing doesn’t do boring), paused for the Simon’s Town Festival swimmers race, and by finals the bay had calmed into a mosaic glass — a perfect, peaceful finish to a raucous morning of racing.

🚣🏻Huge thanks to FBYC, & every attending club and all of the CCRC club family who volunteered making the day run smoothly. Bringing along all the laughter, grit and good banter. Everyone left a winner — and with stories to tell.

Some more off-shore story telling from our clubs recent adventure of Freedom Paddle.

🚣🏻It’s a 27km route around Robben Island on 27 April = our Freedom Day = Freedom Paddle! This incredible race has been going for 9 years - & this was our 6th club entry as Coastal Rowers = REMATCH, REMIX, REMARKABLE!

🚣🏻27 km became an average of 34km due to the roaring conditions, but our clubs grit turned up to 11, — and we didn’t just finish, we dominated. SEEKAT thundered home first in the coastal division (GOLD!), with SKIPJACK breathing down their wake for a perfect club one-two(SILVER!). The crowd went wild. We went louder.

🚣🏻A club chaos highlight:
About 5 km in, SEEKAT’s blade fitting snapped — yes, one blade nearly went rogue. Quick thinking, quicker hands: our bow crew MacGyvered it with the safety whistle string, lashed that blade back on and kept hammering the rest of the 30km until the finish line. From near-disaster to full-throttle comeback. That’s the stuff of legends.

- Whalesong: Angelique, Sibabalwe Msindo, Bonani Gwiji, Ziyanda Morajane, Joshua Abrahams
- Virtual: Derrick & Pete T
- Sea Otter: Tommy & Liam

👑 And the headline MVP: Hayla, and our club captain Sasha — each solo-circumnavigate the island in a single, battling the nastiest waves we’ve ever seen and coming through it like the boss queens they are! Courage, skill, and pure determination! We are so proud!

Massive props to every rower, cox, boat handler, trailer tower, shore crew and cheer squad who braved the soup and kept the vibes electric.

More story telling from our shores…
From the recent Coastal Beach Sprints 2026 — we tackled wind, rain, chaos, & gold.

On 2 - 3 May 2026 Cape Coastal Rowing Club braved the freezing wind and dramatic cloudy rains, over the two day event located at the Hout Bay Beach front for Coastal Beach Sprints 2026, hosted by the newly launched Hout Bay Rowing Club and our South African Coastal Rowing association. Ps: we even lost a gazebo (RIP), but not our vibes. 😅

Our CCRC highlights:

Golds for our club in: mixed quad, men’s double, mixed double, women’s double, and women’s single — overall our rowers smashed it, even despite the crazy weather.

The Juniors were the stars: our CCRC Cadets and the Lawhill kids were unreal — fastest hands, sharpest boat handling, and the best-managers of chaos on the sand. Future champions, no question!

Special mention needs to be made to Harriet, who coached our young Lawhill Cadets, boat-handled both full days, and won gold in all her races! What a legend, in her own time!

Big Shoutout to Hout Bay Rowing Club and South African Coastal Rowing for putting on a gritty, brilliant event. And to everyone who turned up soaked, shivering and joyful — what legends you all are.

If you haven’t tried Coastal Beach Sprints, come for the racing, stay for the spirit, and get comfy for the story-telling afterwards. See you all at the next sand-sea-and-sprints festival! As we chant, “Two-Three-Beach!!!”

Race Update: Murray and Violante take on the Time Trials in Napoli!

The action kicks off tomorrow for our coastal athletes at the Filippi Lido Trophy! Here is what you need to know about their opening races:

⏱️ Murray Bales-Smith: Departs 20th in the Time Trial (around 08:38).
⏱️ Violante Lama: Departs 18th in her Time Trial (around 09:26).

The Stakes:
Both athletes are aiming for a Top 8 finish in the first Time Trial to secure an automatic spot in the knock-outs. Anyone outside the Top 8 will get a second chance in TT2 to fight for the remaining quarter-final spots on Sunday.

Go well, Murray and Violante! Let’s get those Top 8 spots.

Murray Bales-Smith placed 8th in TT1 at the Filippi Lido Cup. He just snuck into the knock-out round of 16 athletes.

The Round of 16 will be between 16:20 and 16:50 this afternoon. The winner goes through to quarterfinals tomorrow.
