Usually we rely on Mathew Scutter and his SkySight soaring weather forecasting and flight-planning software to tell us what the weather is going to do.

This time we gave him 24 metre wings — with our prototype JS5 Rey — and sent him up to find out for himself. 😁

As the founder of SkySight, a JS3 RES owner and a very experienced cross-country pilot around Europe and Australia, Mathew was just the right person to give the JS5 Rey and its new balanced SOLO self launch engine system a proper workout.

His report below is well worth the read — from some rather impressive high-speed numbers to the weather forecaster himself ending up at 300 m AGL, 25 km from home, sniffing out that last little climb. 😎

Thanks for putting our JS5 REY "5" through her paces, Mathew. Who knows… maybe we’ve just found your new preferred glider? 😉

🇮🇹 CIM Rieti – The road to WGC 2027!

The CIM 2026 in Rieti is proving to be the perfect rehearsal for the 2027 FAI World Gliding Championships, where the Club, Standard and 15 meter classes will return to this legendary soaring venue.

On 9th August, Didier Hauss (France) claimed the day win in Open Class with the JS5 over a 463 km racing task, averaging an impressive 161.45 km/h. A fantastic performance in classic Rieti conditions.

On 8th August, Matthias Sturm demonstrated the exceptional speed of the JS3 in Open Class, winning the 2:15 AAT with a blistering 168 km/h average speed. Matthias has held the overall competition lead since Task 2, underlining the consistent performance of the JS3 throughout the competition so far.

With booming thermals, blue skies and world-class racing, CIM 2026 in Rieti is delivering exactly the kind of conditions we can expect to see again at WGC 2027.

Congratulations to Didier, Matthias and all Jonker Sailplanes pilots! 👏Still one week to go.
