Introducing Coach Marike Vreken 🚴🏻♀️
“Cycling has been part of my life for as long as I can remember, and although my serious racing days are behind me, my passion for the sport has never faded.
As an Elite XCO mountain biker, I was selected to represent South Africa at the 2001 and 2002 World Championships, shortlisted for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and won the 2004 SA Cup Series in the Elite Women’s category. Unfortunately, financial constraints prevented me from attending the self-funded World Championships, while no mountain bikers were included in the Commonwealth Games team.
During my racing years, I was supported by Maverick Cycles, a multisport shop in Somerset West owned by Johann Wykerd of Absolute Motion!
In 2016, Johann encouraged me to pursue coaching through Absolute Motion, and I completed my UCI Level 1 qualification. Today, I’m a UCI Level 2 qualified coach, hold a TrainingPeaks coaching qualification and am accredited with Cycling South Africa.
I coach cyclists of all ages and abilities, from young beginners and recreational riders to competitive athletes. Through On Track Racing, I help develop Junior and U23 cyclists, supporting their progression through national and continental championships and creating opportunities for international racing in Europe.
Having experienced firsthand how financial limitations can prevent talented athletes from pursuing their dreams, youth development is particularly close to my heart.
I believe coaching is about more than training plans, power numbers and podiums. It’s about developing the person behind the athlete, building confidence, resilience, discipline, teamwork and a lifelong love for cycling.
These days, I ride mostly recreationally and enjoy the occasional race for fun, while balancing cycling with my full-time career, family and coaching. This has taught me that training needs to fit into real life.
My greatest reward is helping athletes discover their potential, overcome challenges and achieve what they once thought impossible. Although I couldn’t fulfil all my own international racing ambitions, helping others pursue theirs is my way of giving back to the sport that has given me so much.“
