Another great article

One of the ideas I often use when teaching is that martial arts training is a lot like learning music.

The fundamental techniques are the notes. Drills teach us how to connect those notes and begin forming chords. But the deeper skill is learning how to play the music in the moment—especially when timing, distance, pressure, position, and environment begin to change.

That idea is central to what we call the Nucleus in Keysi Fighting Method.

After more than 45 years of studying multiple martial arts, I have seen how easily a system can become a collection of techniques. A practitioner may accumulate an enormous amount of material without developing the ability to organize, adapt, and apply it consistently under pressure.

The real challenge is not simply learning more answers. It is developing a personal training process that teaches you how to solve changing problems with a smaller set of deeply understood principles.

I explore that idea in this new article:

Discover how the Nucleus in Keysi Fighting Method moves training beyond isolated techniques toward adaptable problem-solving under pressure.

The Pensador is not a single shield position.

Shielding appears throughout the martial arts. I have encountered different versions in Muay Thai, Lethwei, Cambodian boxing, Filipino Panantukan, Indonesian Silat, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and many other systems.

Protecting the head when something dangerous is coming toward it is a natural response of the human machine.

The Pensador is a living family of protective structures.

The hands, arms, shoulders, and torso must be able to articulate while the practitioner remains protected. The structure can receive pressure, strike, clear an obstruction, manipulate an opponent’s arms, preserve visual access, and transition from one shielding relationship to another.

That sounds relatively simple until pressure is introduced.

Beginning students commonly learn one recognizable shape and then lock it into position when speed, contact, or uncertainty increases. The deeper skill is learning to keep the shield alive while the environment and tactical problem continue changing.

The shape is only the beginning.

The real Pensador appears when the protective method comes alive under pressure.

Keysi Fighting Method (KFM) is a close-quarters self-defense system designed for chaotic, real-world environments. It builds from strong body structure and the Pensador guard, using short-range striking to protect the head and spine, regain initiative, and create a safe exit. What sets Keysi apart i...
