Yesterday, Brian and I spent some time with a college student who wanted help with his training.
He wasn’t lacking motivation.
He was overwhelmed with information.
How many exercises?
What order should they go in?
How many sets and reps?
How heavy should I go?
When do I increase the weight?
When should I back off?
How often should I train?
Which exercises are actually right for me?
Spend enough time on social media and you can find ten different answers to every one of those questions.
And that’s exactly the problem.
Training doesn’t need to be complicated but it does need to have a purpose.
A good program gives you direction. Exercise selection, exercise order, sets, reps, resistance, progression and recovery should work together based on your goals, your ability and where you are right now.
So yesterday we didn’t just show him some exercises.
We started teaching him how training works.
How to perform movements correctly.
Why certain exercises are chosen.
Why the order matters.
How to know when it’s time to progress.
And how to build a program instead of simply collecting workouts from the internet.
Because the goal of good coaching shouldn’t be to make someone dependent on a trainer forever.
The goal is to educate them.
We want someone to eventually be able to walk into any gym, look at their program, know exactly what they’re doing, understand why they’re doing it, and have the confidence to progress on their own.
That’s what training should give you:
Direction. Understanding. Confidence. Progress.
At Unstoppable Strong, we’re not interested in making fitness more confusing.
We’re here to help make it make sense.
