The league had been renamed prior to the season after beginning in 1948 as the American Amateur Hockey League. The team started strong, winning the USHL championship every season from 1964 to 1968. After the 1968-69 season, the Black Hawks went on a one-year hiatus to become the Minnesota North Stars' top farm team, the Iowa Stars. The Stars finished 35-26-11 in 1969-70, one point behind league ch

ampion Omaha (whom the Stars would later lose to in the Central Professional Hockey League final series). The Stars reverted back to the Black Hawks and the USHL the very next year, amid financial losses topping $150,000 and a Stars move to Cleveland.

The Black Hawks organization would like to thank Chris Dolan for all of his contributions at Young Arena. Congratulations on your retirement, Chris! 👏👏👏

Today, Chris Dolan closed the book on an extraordinary 32-year career at Young Arena. Since the arena first opened its doors in 1994, Chris has been its steady heartbeat and guiding hand — its only Arena Manager from day one. With quiet strength and unwavering dedication, he built more than just operations; he created a welcoming home for the Cedar Valley’s most cherished memories. From the thunder of Black Hawks and Warriors hockey games to thousands of events that brought joy, competition, and community together, Chris helped welcome over nine million visitors through those doors.

His legacy is written in the high standards he set, the staff he mentored, and the genuine warmth he extended to every guest. Young Arena became what it is today because of his vision, integrity, and deep care for this community. Chris, congratulations on a remarkable career and a richly deserved retirement. Thank you for pouring your heart into every shift, every event, and every person who walked through the arena. The next chapter is yours — whether filled with peaceful mornings, golf, travel, family gatherings, or whatever new adventures call your name. You’ve left an indelible mark on the City of Waterloo. We are all better for it. Wishing you joy, rest, and fulfillment in the years ahead.

Chris is pictured with Waterloo Mayor Dave Boesen and Leisure Services Director Todd Derifield who stopped by to wish him well.
