We just finished up an elk hunt in Wyoming with a couple of our Texas friends. It was a good hunt considering it was so hot and there wasn’t many cows around.

Our good friend Doug I. is getting older and experiencing some mobility issues. He had 20 years’ worth of Wyoming preference points and didn’t want to use them on “just a buck.” I reached out to my good friend Chance Marshall, with whom I’ve had several joint guiding opportunities, and asked if we could team up to help Doug get a record-book buck.

We glassed up several potential antelope with horns measuring over 80 inches. We focused on the buck in the video, and Doug made a great shot, anchoring this 82â…ś-inch buck.

Juan immediately jumped in and swam out to retrieve the deer. As they got closer, Chris realized this was the buck he had been hoping to harvest. We had trail-camera photos of this deer, and the turned-down main beam and double row of points on the buck’s left antler made him unmistakable.

Hacienda El Dorado is the place for great whitetails, giant mule deer, and monster desert bighorns. The lodge is second to none! Come hunt with us.

The first of our hunts with Hacienda El Dorado in Mexico this year. Chris shot this buck with his bow and after a long tracking session, we found him by this pond. Chris got another shot into him and he swam out into the water and died.

Last year, I was able to mentor my bear tag to my oldest grandson, Kendrix. He harvested a very nice brown-colored bear after an exciting hunt. The dogs trailed the bear across three or four canyons before finally treeing him. Kendrix made a great shot and harvested his very first bear. It was a hunt and a memory I’ll never forget.

This year, my wife had the opportunity to mentor her bear tag to our second-oldest grandson, McCoy. He was able to harvest a really nice black-colored bear and create a special memory of his own.

These hunts with our grandkids may honestly be even more fun than hunting for yourself. Hunting with a kid in general is just a lot of fun. They’re in it for the experience and are simply excited to be there. There’s no concern about trophy size or expectations—just the excitement of being outdoors, learning, and having fun.

A huge thanks to our houndsman, Kody Boren, for helping make these hunts possible and creating memories our family will cherish for years to come.

What a way to kick off the season!

Our first hunt of the year took us to Utah for black bear, with Kody Boren behind the hounds. Kody is one of the best houndsmen around, and it was great having him along for the hunt.

The first couple of days were tough, and we definitely had to earn it. Then, on day three, everything came together—and in about 10 minutes, the whole hunt changed!

What made this one really special was my wife, Lesa, mentoring her tag to our grandson, McCoy Kohler. McCoy was beyond excited to harvest this bear, and getting to watch him experience it made the hunt that much better.

Great dogs, great people, and a memory our family won’t soon forget. That’s what hunting is all about!
