Street sneaker style on the outside. Serious riding protection on the inside.

The REAX Fulton Air Shoes solve the daily rider dilemma: how to get real motorcycle protection without looking like you’re headed to the track. Designed with heavy-duty perforated leather for maximum airflow, reinforced ankle cups, and a crush-resistant shank, they keep you cool in the heat and protected in the saddle—all while being comfortable enough to wear at your destination all day.

Hi there! I ride motorcycles and I’m here to talk to you about that e-bike that you just got for Christmas or your birthday. It’s really cool, and I think you’re going to have a blast. I just want to make sure you know what you’re getting into, because it might be more dangerous than you realize.

I know what you’re thinking: You’re just a regular person not a psycho, adrenaline-junkie biker with regrettable tattoos and a thirst for fear. I understand, because that’s not who I am either. I ride a motorcycle for a lot of the same reasons you have that e-bike — the freedom and innocence of moving around on wheels, with the wind in your face, is refreshing.

Until you fall down, that is.

This is the adventure motorcycle of your collective dreams. On paper, anyway. A shade under 80 horsepower, 340 pounds with a full fuel tank, and a base price of $13,400. Plus, a six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU), ride modes, fully adjustable ABS, 10 inches of ground clearance, and nearly 200 miles of range. What’s the catch?

Well, it’s not really an adventure bike, per se. Maybe you’re thinking that doesn’t matter to you, but it probably does and I’ll explain why. It’s also not really new. KTM’s 690 Enduro R debuted as a 2008 model. Maybe that’s a feature, more than a catch?

The first motorcycles were born when folks with an engineering bent took what was then called the safety bicycle, bolted a single-cylinder engine inside the diamond frame, incorporated a fuel tank and a leather drive belt, and they were motorcycling.

Riding those first machines was a completely engaging and entirely manual affair in every way. Throttle, spark advance, engine lubrication, heck even pedaling to get up a hill, were all operated by the rider.

How different things are today.

Motorcycles have followed their four-wheeled brethren down the road of ever-increasing technological complexity, providing a staggering and wonderful array of safety, performance, convenience, comfort and "infotainment" functions. As amazing as some of those technologies and the functions they perform may be, though, nothing ever comes without some kind of cost.

Motorcycle design has become stale. Stalled. The Superbike horsepower races are over or boring, the branches on the ADV tree are sagging with plump and overripe machines, and the small-bike craze has leveled into normalcy. Wings? Yawn. Huge TFT screens? Meh. Radar systems? In this economy? And no, dammit, I don’t want another round headlight; what is this, 2014?

There’s arguably only one place in motorcycling where a wildfire of R&D activity has broken out, and that is automatics. Transmissions, clutches, or a combination of the two. Y’see, most motorbikes follow a set of agreed-upon (or mandated) rules for how they work - clutch lever and shifter on the left, five or six gears to select, neutral between first and second, done deal.

The world of automatics is anything but that. Sometimes neutral is all the way at the bottom. Sometimes there’s a parking gear at the bottom, and sometimes there’s a seventh gear at the top. Sometimes you use your fingers to shift and sometimes you use your foot - sometimes it’s neither, sometimes it’s both. Centrifugal clutches, electronic clutches, electronic shifters but also regular ones. It’s the Wild West, and we here at Common Tread found ourselves curious how they all compare.
