**The Longevity Habit That Isn't a Habit**

**The health stat that has nothing to do with food**

Before we talk about workouts or nutrition, ask yourself:

**Why are you doing any of this?**

Not the polite answer. The real one.

A massive study involving nearly **489,000 people** found that people with a stronger sense of purpose had about a **24% lower risk of dying** during the study period.

Even after accounting for things like health behaviors, existing disease, and depression, the association remained.

That doesn't mean purpose is magic.

But it does tell us something important:

**Your WHY matters.**

When you have something you're trying to stay healthy *for*, taking care of yourself becomes easier.

You train when you're tired.
You make better choices when nobody is watching.
You keep going when motivation isn't there.

Think of it this way:

**Willpower is paddling. Purpose is the current.**

Same effort. Very different distance.

So ask yourself:

**"In six months, I want to be able to ______."**

Make it something you want to **do**, not just a number you want to see on the scale.

Then connect your workouts to that goal.

Because you're not just building a body.

**You're building the engine that lets you keep living the life you want to live.**

So before you count another calorie or add another exercise:

**Decide what you're training for.**

Losing sleep doesn't send you to the fridge. It parks you in a chair.

New research from Columbia University: 95 adults cut their sleep by about 80 minutes a night for 6 weeks. They gained a pound and added waist size.

Here's the plot twist. Their hunger hormones barely moved. Their workouts didn't change at all.

What changed? They sat 17 more minutes a day. That was the big shift.

When you're tired, your body doesn't skip the gym. It skips everything else: the pacing, the puttering, the stairs, the fidgeting. All the invisible movement that quietly burns hundreds of calories a day.

One pound in six weeks doesn't sound scary. But nobody short-sleeps for six weeks. People short-sleep for years.

So if your weight is creeping and your diet hasn't changed, don't just audit your plate. Audit your bedtime.

Protect it like an appointment. Because it is one.

Comfort vs. Peace

We live in a world where comfort is easier to find than ever. And there is nothing wrong with comfort itself. The problem is when we become so dependent on it that discomfort starts to feel like something we should never have to experience.

Eventually, you stop asking, “What needs to be done?” and start asking, “Do I feel like doing this?”

That is where discipline begins to disappear.

Every difficulty we avoid teaches us to avoid the next one. Every impulse we surrender to makes the next impulse a little harder to resist.

But the good news is that it works both ways.

What comfort weakens, practice can rebuild.

The Stoics understood that voluntary discomfort was not about making yourself miserable. It was about reminding yourself that you can function without constantly needing life to be easy.

You practice discomfort because freedom matters.

Train when you do not feel like it.
Do the difficult thing.
Delay gratification.
Sit with boredom.
Keep your commitments.
Get comfortable being uncomfortable.

Eventually, what once felt unbearable becomes ordinary.

And the things that once controlled you no longer get a vote.

That is the difference between a life governed by mood and a life governed by principle.

Comfort says: “I am well because nothing is disturbing me.”

Peace says: “Even when something disturbs me, I remain mine.”

One depends on favorable circumstances.

The other depends on character.

That is worth practicing.

Women Aren’t Small Men. But They Don’t Need a Completely Different Workout Either.
There’s a lot of information online about “female-specific training” right now.
Some of it is excellent. Some of it takes a good piece of research and turns it into an absolute rule.
The truth is more useful.
Women benefit from the same fundamentals that build a strong, healthy body in men:
Progressive resistance training.
Adequate protein.
Proper nutrition.
Cardiovascular fitness.
Recovery.
Consistency.
But there are also differences worth paying attention to—energy availability, hormonal changes, perimenopause, menopause, bone health and recovery.
That’s why we don’t hand every woman the same generic workout and calorie target.
We build the plan around YOU.
Our new Month-to-Month Coaching Membership provides:
✔️ Personalized workout plans
✔️ Macro and nutrition guidance
✔️ Accountability and ongoing support

Same food. Same calories. One group lost 2.5 more pounds.

The only difference?

The clock.

A new BMJ Medicine analysis looked at 41 clinical trials involving 2,287 adults and compared people who ate earlier in the day with those who continued eating later into the evening.

The early eaters lost about 1.15 kg (2.5 lbs) more and also had significantly lower fasting insulin.

Why?

Your body simply seems to handle food better earlier in the day. Insulin sensitivity, digestion, and other metabolic processes tend to work more favorably earlier than they do late at night.

So here's what I want you to try this week:

🍳 Eat a real breakfast or lunch.
🍽️ Make dinner your smallest meal.
⏰ Try to finish eating about 3 hours before bed.

That's it.

No new foods.
No cutting calories.
No complicated diet.

Just shift the timing forward and see how you feel.

You don't always have to eat less to get more out of what you're already eating. Sometimes you just need to eat it earlier.

**JP Brannon — 14 Years Old to 19**

JP was **14 years old** when he joined the gym in June of 2021. He's 19 now and getting married soon!

Five years is a long time, especially when you're talking about a kid growing up.

When JP first joined, I used to get a LOT of complaints from a select few people around my age. 😂

He was cocky. He would camp out in the squat rack. He'd hang around machines and stations longer than he should. And I'll be the first to admit, I didn't handle every interaction with him perfectly. I had more than a few fairly harsh conversations with him.

But here's the thing about JP: **he always listened.**

Whether I was always right or not, he listened to what I had to say and worked toward getting better.

Fast forward five years and that 14-year-old kid is now 19, working in a business with his dad, getting ready to get married, and has developed into a young man with a fantastic attitude who brings a positive vibe into the gym every time he walks through the door.

Not every kid survives their teenage years with their gym membership still active. 😂

JP did.

And he's now a fantastic member who brings more to the table than some of the people who used to complain about him.

That experience is one of the reasons I get frustrated when I hear adults complain about **"kids these days."**

If you're going to complain about a teenager without ever giving them a chance, without ever taking a few minutes to explain gym etiquette, and without even attempting to help them understand what they're doing wrong... what's the point?

If a kid is camping out on a piece of equipment and sitting on their phone, maybe talk to them. Say, *"Hey man, mind if I work in?"* Explain how things work.

I've always found it funny when an adult complains about kids sitting on their phones between sets, only to look over and see that same adult on their phone during their workout.

"Oh, but they're on Instagram or TikTok and I'm on Facebook or YouTube."

😂 Come on.

Let's all work together. **It takes a village, remember?**

Now, I'm not saying every kid is going to respond appropriately. Some won't. And the ones who refuse to follow the rules will be asked to leave—regardless of their age.

I've lost count of the young members I've banned for six months because they weren't ready to follow the rules. After that, they were allowed to come back, sit down with me, and restart their membership.

Most of them were never a problem again.

I'm not saying anyone needs to spend an extra 30 minutes in the gym trying to mentor a teenager. I'm simply saying that sometimes taking **a few minutes to talk to a young person instead of immediately writing them off** can make a bigger difference than you realize.

Give them a chance.

Coach them.

Hold them accountable.

And sometimes, they'll surprise you.

**JP certainly did.**

Keep it up, JP. You're killing it in here! 👊

And thank you for all the kind words and encouragement I hear you giving to people in the gym every chance you get.

That's the kind of member I want around here.

Also check out his business when you get a chance!
