One of the best ways to stay safer on the water is to learn from what has already gone wrong...
Twice every year, American Whitewater publishes a summary of whitewater accidents that have taken place across the US.
These reports include real incidents from rivers across the country—what happened, what conditions were like, what may have contributed, and in many cases, what we can learn from it.
And while they're not uplifting reads, we find them incredibly useful for helping people stay safe out on the water and always reference them during our instruction.
A few things they remind us of:
- Bad things can happen, even with routing outings and people who are experienced
- Looking at real accidents helps us spot common risk factors (e.g. paddling solo, not wearing a PFD, paddling in cold-water, et al.)
- They give us real case studies to think through and take with us going forward
- They remind us that whitewater is serious, can have grand consequences, and deserves proper preparation and respect
Sharing, reading and talking about these incidents helps all of us make better decisions, lower our risk, and build a stronger safety culture on the water.
The goal of these summaries isn’t to scare people away from whitewater. It’s to help more of us keep doing what we love and to return home safely afterward.
