Physical education feels different when students can actually see their effort in real time.

At Natomas Charter School in the Natomas Unified School District, students are taking a more active role in their own learning with Heart Zones. Instead of simply participating in class, they're learning how different activity levels feel, understanding what it takes to reach moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), and receiving immediate feedback that helps them make adjustments throughout the lesson.

The result is a more engaging PE experience where students are motivated to move with purpose, better understand their own fitness, and build lifelong healthy habits. By combining objective data with daily physical activity, Heart Zones helps turn every class into an opportunity for students to learn more about their bodies while having fun.

Some of the best ideas in PE are the ones that fit naturally into what you're already doing.

That's exactly what you'll find in our Model Schools spotlight featuring Sherwood Elementary in the Springfield Public Schools, and PE Teacher Danielle O'Neil.

Danielle explains how Heart Zones became a seamless part of her daily routine, giving students meaningful, real-time feedback without requiring her to redesign her lessons.

One of our favorite quotes from the story:

"One of the things I love most about using Heart Zones' heart rate monitors with my 3rd–5th graders is how it helps students take ownership of their activity levels."

The blog is chock-full of great quotes from Danielle, her students, her principal, and district leadership, along with practical examples of how Heart Zones makes it easy to integrate heart rate technology into everyday PE while helping students better understand their own activity levels.

Childhood obesity isn't a future problem. It's happening right now.

One of the biggest reasons Heart Zones exists is to help schools create lifelong healthy habits before chronic disease takes hold. That's why initiatives like The Daily Mile deserve attention. The concept is refreshingly simple: give students just 15 minutes each day to walk, jog, or run outdoors. No special equipment. No complicated curriculum. Just consistent movement.

Programs like this remind us that fighting childhood obesity doesn't always require expensive solutions. It requires making physical activity a daily priority. Every minute kids spend moving is an investment in healthier hearts, healthier bodies, and healthier futures.

What if the technology in your PE program actually gave you more time to teach—not less?

At Alimacani Elementary in Duval County Public Schools, Coach Aaron Jones has found exactly that with Heart Zones. Instead of spending valuable class time managing equipment or troubleshooting technology, students are quickly up and moving while receiving real-time feedback that keeps them engaged and motivated. As Aaron puts it:

"Because of Heart Zones, I look at each lesson differently. I try to see if the activity I'm doing is in the warm-up zone, moderate zone or vigorous zone."

That shift has helped create a more intentional, data-driven physical education experience where every lesson is designed with student outcomes in mind.

From live heart rate displays on the Big Board to FIT Points that encourage participation, Heart Zones has transformed the way students interact with physical activity while giving teachers meaningful insights they can use immediately. Read how Alimacani Elementary is using technology to build healthier, more engaged learners and why it has become one of Heart Zones' featured Model Schools.

What does a truly student-centered PE program look like?

At North Country Union Junior High School, Heart Zones has helped transform physical education by giving every student personalized, real-time feedback that empowers them to exercise at the intensity that's right for their body.

"The use of heart rate monitors in PE classes empowers students to take ownership of their learning and well-being by providing real-time feedback on their physical activity." - Edie Flores, Principal

Rather than comparing themselves to classmates, students focus on their own progress, build confidence, set meaningful fitness goals, and develop healthy habits that can last a lifetime. The program has even expanded beyond the gym, creating valuable connections to science lessons on the cardiovascular system and homeostasis.

Read how the outstanding PE team is using Heart Zones to create an engaging, data-driven learning environment where every student has the opportunity to succeed.
