Happy June and happy summer! This is the perfect month to highlight and acknowledge, Sarah Musgrave, who is our Recreation Coordinator for all things childcare & “School’s Out.” The largest part of Sarah’s role is overseeing the After the Bell program, all 4 of our summer camps, as well as the holiday and vacation weeks. A role that truly never has an “off season,” Sarah keeps the operations of the childcare program running smoothly and efficiently. She is responsible for scheduling our seasonal staff at the 4 different after-school sites, helps to onboard new employees, and helps those who get promoted succeed in their new roles. She assists the staff with curriculum planning and helps to maintain a fun and safe environment at all of our sites.

Showing the numbers!
After the Bell- 225 children; 40 staff daily
Summer Camp- 400+ children; 100+ staff
Offering support year-round – fewer than 20 weekdays without childcare offerings annually

Like many of us at Parks and Rec, Sarah wears many hats! She is always willing to work extra hours and weekends to ensure that the City of S**o parades and S**o Main Street events are safe and staffed appropriately. You will see Sarah representing the department at several community events such as National Night Out, Harvest Fest, Mary’s Walk and more! Sarah created our Annual Spring Fest event at Diamond Riverside Park and often assists with our SENIORity programs and other special events. Sarah helped start our first ever "Couch to 5k" Program this spring. She has been a certified Safe Sitter instructor for over 10 years and has taught over 400 students to successfully become safe babysitters for this community.

Let’s take a moment to thank Sarah for all of her hard work and dedication to S**o!! We are lucky to have her on our team.

🏃🏻‍♀️🏃‍♂️Today our S**o Parks & Rec “Couch to 5K” participants finished their 9-week program by running in the John Andrews Memorial 5K race on the Eastern Trail. The rain didn’t stop this motivated crew and our participants made up about 1/4 of the total runners who showed up today!

The Couch to 5K program inspired both new and experienced runners and held the group accountable each week to meet up and train. The group met once per week to run & walk for about 30-40 minutes. (This counted as just 1/3 of the expected exercises per week). Week 1 started with interval training with the max run time at 1 min each. Today everyone finished the whole 5k. 💪🏼 It was such a rewarding day to see everyone finish and everyone was all smiles and in the rain! One of our 14 year old runners also placed 1st in her division! 🥇

Congratulations to everyone who made it through all 9 weeks from start to finish. We can’t wait to do this again in the fall!

Last week we held our Annual Spring BBQ for about 175 of our S**o Parks & Recreation SENIORity Programs participants! We always have a good time at this event and appreciate the various other department directors who visit and help serve. A special shout out and thank you to the City of S**o Government team who stepped up to help cook this year, and to Bradley Street Deli & Catering for the side salads & blueberry cake. As always, thank you to the Communications Department for capturing the day and the group photo.

On the raffle tickets this year we asked participants to tell us what their favorite thing was about S**o Parks and Recreation. We wanted to share the findings that made us smile: SPR’s friendly staff, the bus trips, the community aspect and being social, special events, EVERYTHING!, line dancing, food, the variety of programs, yoga, Pickleball, Mahjongg, knitting and more!! Thank you to everyone who attended. We appreciate your loyalty to our program!

This month we are highlighting one of the department’s Assistant Directors, Steve Brown!

Steve will hit his 15-year milestone with the City of S**o this summer. Like most recreation professionals Steve wears several hats for our department. His job title notes that he oversees our adult and youth programs, as well as our facilities, but he does so much more! He is passionate about building a strong team of camp counselors and has over 25 years of experience working in recreation camps.

We are especially lucky to have Steve’s kitchen expertise and ServSafe certification. Steve is the man behind the scenes (and in the kitchen) at most of our special events. These events include our annual Saturday with Santa breakfast, Annual SENIORity Thanksgiving Lunch, Annual Spring BBQ, SENIORity Dinner Dances, the monthly breakfast clubs, and more! Since May of 2025, Steve has been responsible for cooking over 900 meals for the community.

Steve is always thinking outside the box and bringing new and different opportunities to our participants. Several years ago he spearheaded bringing Lego Robotics to S**o and was involved regionally with the Southern Maine Gearbots non-profit organization for 8 years. One of Steve’s most recent community connections was bringing Independent Pro Wrestling events to the Community Center. Thank you, Steve, for you dedication and loyalty to this department!
