Amazing Life.

Heinz Stücke has died at his home in Hövelhof, the German town he left in November 1962 and returned to only after fifty years on the road. He was 86.

Stücke set out at 22 with a three-speed bicycle, roughly $300 in his pocket, and no particular route. He came back having ridden more than 648,000 kilometres across 196 countries and 86 territories. He believed he had visited every country on Earth when he reached the Seychelles in 1996. He kept going for another sixteen years anyway, because the arrival, when it finally came, had felt smaller than the road.

He funded the journey by selling photocopied booklets of his own photographs at post offices in Cape Town, Buenos Aires, Tokyo and Sydney. He wrote for German newspapers. He shot the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. He survived a truck collision in the Atacama, a shooting in Zambia, and an assault outside Cape Town that broke his teeth. Both of his parents died while he was somewhere else.

In his last years he was bedridden in the house at Hövelhof, surrounded by maps, letters and the marked-up flag board he carried through every border crossing. Visitors said he still spoke about the road as though he were on it.

He was the working-class kid who turned a factory-town restlessness into the longest continuous bicycle journey ever recorded. The map was his home.

Got to teach these young women some mountain bike maintenance and bicycle safety tips. They are counselors for a girls summer camp in Alabama. The camp has several hundred girls and young women in attendance each summer. So fun to be a small part of what they are doing.

Couldn't agree more. That $30 chain replacement can save a $300 cassette.

Underrated bit of wisdom that applies to more than bikes. Service it before it makes a noise. 🚲 By the time something squeaks, clicks, or grinds, it's already been wearing down for weeks.

The noise is the final warning, not the first sign. Look after the quiet stuff and you'll spend far less on the loud stuff.

Makes all the difference.

Makes all the difference.

There are two types of rider, those who resistance train and those who don’t know what they are missing.

The ‘all you need to do is ride more’ folk have never followed a well structured resistance training plan. I have never met a rider who has trained well at home or in the gym and hasn’t seen significant improvements on the bike. This is coming from someone who loves to spend as much time as possible on the bike, just like you.

Now you may not want to train, I get it and that’s fine. But if you want to see real results on the bike it will make a significant difference.

You will climb faster and easier.

You will descend with less fatigue and more in control.

You will reduce your risk of injury and decrease aches and pains.

You will all round just ride better and enjoy your time on the bike more.

Ready to start? Get stuck into the MTB Fit app on a 30 day free trial!

You can train at home with just a set of resistance bands or in the gym with a full gym setup (you get both sets of plans included) and you will see significant benefits on the bike.
