Family Protection Tips

Dad tip: if a car follows your family, do not drive home.

I'm a dad of two daughters, and this is the one thing I want every parent to know. Leading someone to your house is the last thing you want to do.

Instead:

1. Stay calm and keep driving steady and legal
2. Drive to a police station, a fire station, or a busy, well-lit place
3. Call 911 on the way and describe the car
4. Keep the doors locked

Here's the homework: find the nearest police or fire station to your house, your work and your kids' school, and save them in your phone tonight. It takes two minutes.

Entering Through the Back Door!

They’re repainting the sidewalk today and have asked everyone to enter from the back door.

Please be cautious when entering and exiting, especially when coming around the building. Parents will pick up and drop off children from the back door. Adults can also park around the back for classes.

Practice Resilience

Resilience isn't something kids are born with. It's something they practice.

Every week on the mat, I watch it happen. A student misses a technique in front of the class. Gets knocked down in sparring. Doesn't pass a stripe test the first time. And then they get back up, fix one thing, and try again.

That's the whole skill. Not avoiding the hard moment, but learning what to do right after it.

Parents, here's how to practice it at home this week:

Let them struggle a little. Before you step in to fix it, count to ten. Give them the chance to solve it first.

Praise the effort, not the outcome. "You kept going when it got hard" builds more than "You're so talented."

Talk about your own setbacks. Kids learn resilience by watching how you handle a bad day.

Ask one question after a tough moment: "What will you try differently next time?" It turns failure into a plan.

Kids, your challenge: The next time something feels hard, say it out loud: "I can't do this yet." Then try one more time.

Resilience is built one rep at a time, on the mat and at home.
