Japanese Sword Arts Study • Richmond, VA Come explore the Japanese sword arts with us! Beginner friendly to those 16 years old and up. Classes are operated out of the RVA Katana location at 1909 W.

The Japanese Sword Arts Study program is open to all individuals ages 16 and up, interested in exploring and discovering more about the legendary sword martial arts of Japan. The class is designed as a springboard for invidividuals who want to get started but don't know where to begin. Cary Street in Richmond, VA (across from the BP gas station at Meadow and Cary). There are no signup fees or spec

ial requirements, classes are a $12 mat fee paid at the end of each session. Class schedule:

Tuesdays 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm (Beginner-focused class)
Wednesday 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Saturdays - 9:00 am - 10:00 am

The curriculum is taken from classical Koryu Kenjutsu/Battojutsu (Kukishin Ryu) with all classes taught by Scott Takahashi. There are no ranks or titles awarded in the training, with each class covering requisite fundamentals without typical ego segregation found in American martial arts schools. Students learn combative positions, footwork, cutting, blocking, drawing, and formal methods in addition to Tameshigiri cutting of soft and hard targets (Tatami Omote and bamboo) and the wearing of authentic Japanese armor (Yoroi). Japanese history, language, culture, and philosophy is also presented with the classes and students have the opportunity to travel to Japan each year with Takahashi Sensei to further their exploration of the arts, direct from the source. Previous martial arts experience is not necessary, just a willingness to learn something new and take the mindset of exploring and discovering. Our motto is 温故知新 Onkochishin - "Study Something Old, Learn Something New".

Many thanks to the incredibly talented Miki Yomura for her Koto perfomance after class, joined by the wonderful calligraphy artist Kyomi Takahashi. Thank you for sharing your cultural arts with us. We are more than just trained fighting monkeys, and exploring the history, culture, language, philosophies, and arts help us to better understand and appreciate what we study at a deeper level.
